Question Chimney flue cap

Hopefully somebody here has more knowledge than me about chimney flue caps.

I have a gas fireplace(conversion from a real fireplace years before we moved in) and a few nights ago we realized that a couple bats had managed to get inside our chimney. We managed to get the bats out, but I would really prefer to never deal with that again in this lifetime. Someone wrapped chicken wire around the cap years ago to deter critters, but apparently that is not enough.

I've got some wire around with holes only a little larger than a Tic Tac. So, my question is: Can I wrap this wire around the flue cap instead of the chicken wire? Or will this have a negative impact on the ventilation from the fireplace?

I don't see why it should be an issue. But, I don't know a lot about this sort of thing either. So, I'd appreciate if someone who knows more would weigh in.

Thanks

The chicken wire spacing is too large. You need something like this 1/4 x 1/4 mesh. I've done a couple of wood stove insulated chimneys. The rain cap for them has a similar mesh already attached.

Yep, should be no problem. I have a store bought cap on my wood stove chimney and it's got a mesh made of flat stainless with openings probably 1/4 x 1/2" ... way less room for flow than a wire mesh.

I’ve done something similar, without any problems.

Great! That looks exactly like the roll of stuff I've got in the garage. I was hoping that would work.
