Hood insulation
If u look at pic attached u will see my hood insulation has a hole right about where the fan shroud would hit. This came with the car from PO. I am wondering if this was done on purpose to clear the shroud?
Is this an issue, or should I ignore and just replace the insulation assuming there are no clearance issues with reproduction insulation? |

That actually isn't factory style insulation. It's too thick, and could be actually touching that fan. It's supposed to be a "compressed" style and flatter. Here is the correct style. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...A&web_access=Y

The repo hard 1 that is out now is very fragile like egg shells & breaks putting the clips in . 64 uses a steel hood pad brace up front & yours is missing it. 65/67 is wrong for a 64.

thanks chrisp. I should have stated that it is for a 64. I'll research the brace. Disappointing about quality for a 64....

With the '64, even the molded, thinner hood pad will rub on the Tripower air cleaners and scratch the chrome. This is true even with the steel retainer used on '64 only. I'd suggest you leave the hood pad off.
Speaking from experience with two '64's. I use old chrome air cleaner tops on mine when driving and change them to shiny ones at shows.

I use blue ( home low stick ) masking tape on tops of filters . then remove when at show.

So I went ahead and ordered the correct molded insulation as well as the brace that is for the 64. Plus metal clips. Had plastic before. All from Ames. Brace had to bent a little, not perfect fit, but close.
Looks a lot better than that hole. Also does not touch shroud so no idea what that hole was from with old one. |

You’ll now have scratched air cleaners on the center & front carb.

The original insulation on my ‘64 was thick, not molded. Either one touches the front & center air cleaners and scratches the chrome.

The perfect storm

clobbered by all the air it moved. And it acts like a sweater being unravelled, once something works it's way loose, it takes nearby stuff with it. And gravity certainly wasn't helping, it kept trying to introduce the two. |

Yup, high speed turbulence from the fan ripped it.
Here’s a 1964 GTO low mile Survivor with an intact hood insulation. Chris.

Turbulence is an interesting culprit. Would not have thought of that but it makes sense.
My chrome air cleaners already were scratched so no harm, no foul. |

NOS insulation from 1991 restoration. The 4 markers show where the molded pockets were. GTOAA judges docked me one time. Said it was the wrong color. Next year I brought the cardboard package it came in. End of story....
