Default 65 seat belt question

I've been thru to many archives today so I'm asking for help....

Seat belt retractors: Which way do they mount? Thick side or thin side to the seat? I don't remember the tag showing when belt is used...and yes, I did NOT take a picture>>>>>>>>>

And, has anyone taken the buckle apart?? I have looked on youtube. Most seem generic so I wanted to ask..

Thanks and happy Memorial Day to all..

Thin side to the seat, tag down. But I'll tell you right now I've have seen both ways on later belts and the retractors have not been taken apart.

Which buckles? I have taken tons of the Deluxe (chrome, red carriage) buckles apart. Really pretty easy.

They come apart pretty easy, but you need to pry the back half off. Below are some photos. When you pry the back half off, you need to get on top of the lip on the front half and pry up and back at the same time. It doesn't take a lot. Once the back half slides off, the front latch parts come out pretty easy. Be sure not to bend or break the spring clip and make careful note how it fits into the mechanism. Removing the friction bar is easy, just pry one of the ears of the rear portion out a bit to allow it to fall out. To remove the latch lever, just push it rearward against the spring to release its lower tab from the track in the main body.

To reassemble, you should be able to just press things together without prying anything but placement of the spring is key.

I can try to make a video if this still isn't clear.

Good morning.. Rich, your instructions are spot on. I had the first buckle apart in 5 minutes. Then,,,, I spent 45 minutes trying to get the second one apart. Finally decided to lay it down and try again this weekend.

Thanks for your help!!!!

OK Seat belt buckles taken care of. Thanks RICH-. Your help was spot on!! Now one last question. Can the plastic that covers the retractors be removed while the belt is complete? I have tried but seems like the plastic will break if I try to FORCE much more.. I must be overlooking something!!!!!

THANKS

"Bill"!

SO OK, I guess I did not keep looking on YouTube for the correct movie title. It is under 68 El Camino and the guy shows how to FORCE the chrome piece thru the good cover. Thanks to all!!!!!
