Started on the engine yesterday.
Pulled the radiator and front of the engine apart to have the original radiator recored and water pump rebuilt. It was pretty crusty in there where the coolant sat for all those years, but luckily it cleaned up good with just some minor pitting on the inside of the cover.

Divider plates & T-stat.
The divider plates are toast, but actually weren't rusted through after scraping off most of the crud. It also appeared to have the original t-stat in it, "Delcostat" - never seen one before.

Timing gear.
Also checked the timing cam gear to see if it had been replaced, nope. Sure enough, it was the original aluminum cam gear with nylon teeth (at one time), but not a plastic tooth in sight! The chain was very loose and riding on the aluminum teeth, but it never jumped time. Got the front of the block cleaned up pretty good.

I found the steering box.
For some reason this box was covered in grease and grime on top. While I was in there with the degreaser, I went ahead and cleaned the top side of it, came out real nice. If it has a bad leak, I'll find it now!

Took valve covers off.
Was glad to see the inside of the heads were very clean, no sludge at all. Even the underside of the valve covers were perfectly clean. Rex must have changed the oil regularly.

Wow! I can't believe how clean that motor is inside. Water pump was suprising too!

Storage decal on front of RH cylinder head.
While removing the passenger side smog pump bracket, I found this underneath it. Has anyone seen one before?

Is there a big time difference between the casting date of the block to the rest of the components or build date?

Thats only a little over three weeks from casting to vehicle build date. Figure in the transit time to the west coast, that doesn't leave anytime to be stored.

Removed the intake & valley pan to take a look.
Not much new to report lately, been on a little break. I did go ahead and remove the intake and valley cover since I already have new gaskets for them. Also wanted to check out the inside of the valley and be able to pour some fresh oil onto the cam and lifters. It was very clean inside there too, but dry. I did find one piece of plastic from the old nylon timing gear that was lying in a recessed part of the valley. I'm guessing that it must have been thrown up there by the crank through one of the open passages along the camshaft?

Funky Intake Port... expert opinions, please...
Forgot to post these photos earlier... should I be concerned with this casting booger and partially blocked opening of this one port? I really hate to mess with it if its not a big deal. The "booger" is rock solid by the way, its not breaking loose on its own.

Since you have the intake off I would go ahead and grind that off. May not ever come loose but they way my luck runs it would hang a valve, bust a piston and crack a block.
