I looked at the application list on Sealed Power's web site and the earliest application that I can find is for the 1984 Pontiac built Iron Duke 2.5L 4 cylinder used in Fieros and other GM cars as the standard 4 cylinder. It was used in 4.3L V-6 starting in 85 and various other V-6s in later years up until 2009. It was used in SBCs (not all, some use flat until 95) from 87 until their demise. It was used in various LS motors in cars, including the 7.0L until 2013, but apparently not later. The last application I found was in 6.0L truck engines in 2018.

Let's stop talking about LS7 lifters. If we want to call it something other than the HT-2148, let's call it the Iron Duke lifter.
Well that's very interesting. The old '80s Iron Dukes had roller cams? Who would've guessed that?

Whatever we call it, I agree this needs to stop being called "LS7" anything. They are not LS7 lifters and LS7 lifters will not work. Using "LS7" in the name for this swap creates unnecessary confusion and I guarantee someone is going to try to use actual LS7 lifters and have a catastrophic failure.

The lifter I used was an ls7 lifter. It looks as though the external dimension are the same except the oil band, so the test I did to see how much on the lifter below the machined flats come out of the lifter bore is relevant. The cam was is a straub custom cam. I think the lobes are Howard's.

The vast majority of lifters available for the roller cam sbc and iron dukes seem to use the latter ls7 type lifter. I wonder how long it will be before sealed power drop the 2148 lifter.

Sealed Power lists the 2148 as the replacement lifter for hundreds and hundreds of applications from 1984 to 2018. Not only for the Iron Duke and apparently all roller littered traditional SBCs, but also for things like the modern GTOs and LS7 'vettes. It seems like this would be one of their most popular lifters and unlikely to be canceled unless they want to get out of the lifter business.

Did you pull the Delphi lifter that you measured out of an actual factory built LS7? Or where did it come from? Do you know the Delphi or GM part number?

That's very interesting Tom. I've never heard of them. But that doesn't mean anything. Their design with 4 oil holes looks like a good idea. It would be interesting to see how they physically stack up to the Sealed Power HT 2148s. Curious about the price too.

So I was curious. I looked up Gaterman. Apparently they don’t retail. It says to call and speak to Bill. So I did. The roller lifter they make is retailed by Summit amongst others. A set is about $274. Bill insisted they wouldn’t work on a Pontiac. To me, their picture looks like it would work. He wouldn’t give me the dimensions of where the oil band is. Too bad. It looks like a quality unit. Summit lists it under Howard’s Cams (per Bill) as part number 91174- if anyone wants to look at this lifter online.

Default LS lifter hype

All the hype on LS lifters so I took a look here's what I found.
The 2148 lifter will work to about 400 lobe lift as stated. I tried several hyd roller cams that I have and one of them the lifter body hits the lobe. All the postings on LS lifter no one has mentioned it so make sure you check clearance. So then the dog bone issue I made what I call a set of lifter handcuffs see pics spider will hold it down on top of lifter bore with spider.

Just out of curiosity, how does the body of the lifter make contact with the lobe if the roller is on it?

Dave

Couple questions. Which cam had an interference issue? Do you think it was the profile of the lobe? And that handcuff you made. Very nice. Details? Are the slots wire EDM’d? What material did you make it from? Just curious, I have a machinist background.

I emailed Bill today and he replied that you can order a single lifter under p/n GP1012-1 (of course not direct; only thru a dealer). I hate these tiny companies that won't sell direct--especially in this case where a dealer is probably clueless about how to get a single unit.

I do think it’s important to point out that this specific setup is probably going to be limited to milder combinations. If you’re wanting to use aggressive lobes with large amounts of lobe lift, this setup probably isn’t for you.

In fact if I end up looking into this I’ll likely have a change cam myself. My HR is spec’d with comp’s XFI lobes. Although the lift is moderate, the ramp rates are about as aggressive as you can go on a HR setup. Probably partly why my valvetrain is so noisy.

Milling them out on 6061 aluminum. Plan on printing a set out of nylon to try out

Bill,
This is AWESOME!!! I ride Harley's, so your idea is something I've been pondering since the Twin Cam's and M8's use a similar anti-rotation system.

You guys RULE!! This is what I wanted: Pontiac people coming together to better our hobby for the benefit of all!
