That's an awesome saw. Do you have a wood stove? Looks like a lot of good firewood to me!

I only need to do some branch trimming once in a while and since I was given some Ryobi 18V tools, sawsall, impact driver I bought the weed wacker and a pole saw. I won't add the extension to the pole saw it just doesn't seem strong enough for that. It will cut 3-4" branches real quick and the battery lasts long enough to get the job done.

They had the 5Ah model listed for $279 -Clearance Price-
and the 2Ah model listed for $269
at my local Lowes
So that was a no-brainer on selection.

Now the 5Ah is out of stock and price is listed as $399
i pondered it too long , missed the boat.

I have an 18V Ryobi 10" Chainsaw and a 4Ah battery that is pretty awesome for its size.
Can imagine an 80V 18" would be pretty wicked.

Here is my typical wood delivery if the wife and I neglect our wood cutting out back for a couple of years. Getting more common as we have to go farther back into the woods to get the timber we want. All the "easy" stuff has been taken over the last 30 years. About eight full cords in that pile.

well, , the boat came back into the harbor this afternoon.

All stores within 50 miles showed 0 inventory.
Can't get one shipped from Lowes either.
Found a good deal on eBay for one - but the 5 year saw / 3 year battery warranty is out the window if you don't buy the saw from Lowes and have a valid receipt from Lowes at the time of trouble.

Did a google and it came up for $233.09 at Lowes ?
But when clicked the link it took me to my local store with 0 on hand and $399 price.

So i went to the local store today to check on something else.
They had 4 of the damn things (5Ah models) for the $279 Clearance Price.
And 2 of the 2Ah for $269

Went to check out , and it rang up for $233.09 ? plus tax was $249.41
{ i was Mr. Super Smiley Face }

On the receipt it says
*MINIMUM RETAIL PRICE APPLIED TO THIS ITEM*
Never seen that before on a Lowes receipt.

The bad part is i might not keep it.
I went ahead and got it while i could - until i can make up my mind.

Its a lot heavier than i thought it would be - i think its heavier than my 18" Poulan Gas saw. I was expecting ultra-light electric.
I don't use a chainsaw a whole lot - but i'm sick of screwing with the Poulan the last few times i used it. Its 20 years old anyway.

They also have 16" 60volt 2Ah GreenWorks saw on Clearance for $149 (regular $250)
Its quite a bit lighter than the Kobalt 18"
4 year saw/4 year battery warranty
But all they had was the display left at my store.
2 stores in next town over show to have some in stock.
I might get one of them instead.

The tree work i'm looking at soon is going to mostly be climbing up the trees and dropping them little by little.
Battery power is my best bet when i get up there

Yep, for limbing up in a tree ... can't think of anything better than a lightweight electric. Stihl does make some very light weight, 12" bar gas saws for tree work. But any gas saw that you have to pull start while balanced up in a tree is a bit scary.

I just spent the last couple days chopping down the front ash tree that was dying. I added one more thing on the list that is not fun at 50, climbing in and out of a tree. The Ryobi 14. cordless saw worked great cutting and sectioning larger limbs. Also cutting the larger trunk was easy enough although trunk was wider then the 14” saw. I just had to cut and then roll trunk to cut all the way through. . I had 2 ryobi 40v batteries which is a must for the tree I was cutting down. I also bought an extra chainsaw chain from Home Depot as back up. My one complaint was when I was cutting up tree limbs some of the smaller limbs knocked the chain off about 5-6 times. It was pretty easy putting chain back on saw, just annoying. Also lucky mornings are cool here in CO as hornets had a large nest where tree had split one winter. Ash beetles and a heavy snow is what took out this tree out

A new chain on a saw will stretch quickly. Will need to be adjusted a couple of times in the first few hours of use. After than it will usually be ok ... the manual should have the recommendations for tension, set when COLD. Don't adjust the tension when hot to the same as you would when cold, or when the saw cools down it will put tremendous stress on the drive sprocket bearings.

This last hurricane blew down some more trees.

TJ said one is probably near 15", maybe. The rest are smaller, on the trail she checked. She hasn't checked all the trails.

I ordered a new chain for the 12" Kobalt. It's done a LOT of cutting with the original chain. Let TJ put the new chain on. She read the manual & can now replace a chain, with no problem.

The 12" is great for limbs & small stuff, up to maybe 6". And it's much lighter than the 80v. So, with new chains on the pole saw & 12", plus the new 80v, we're ready to clear some more trails.

Public Service Announcement
Haul Butt to your nearest Lowes and buy a new battery chainsaw ASAP !
These 4 saws are on Secret Clearance Sale

It appears they Zero-Out their online inventory when they go to these rock-bottom prices. So you will have to go in person to see what is, or isn't, left in stock.

And also appears that just about every store is hit & miss on posting these sale prices as far as the 4 different saws that are slashed in price.
I went to 2 different Lowes stores in Greensboro today and pieced all the puzzle together in the travels.

The Kobalt 80 Volt 18" with 5Ah battery is $233 (Ponyakr's saw) {$399 originally}
Just the battery alone (5Ah) is over $200
5 year saw / 3 year battery warranty
30 day trial / return

The same saw, Kobalt 80 Volt 18" - but with 2Ah Battery - is $155 !!! {$269 originally}
Same warranties
Ponyakr posted links to these Kobalt's in his first post.

Next is the GreenWorks 60 Volt 16" with 2Ah battery = $149 {$249 originally}
Just the battery is $129 by itself
4 year saw / 4 year battery warranty
30 day trial / return
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Greenworks-...ery/1001034570

Lastly is the Craftsman 20 Volt 12" with 4Ah battery = $71 {$179 originally}
Just the battery is $100 by itself
3 year saw / 2 year battery warranty
90 day trial / return on Craftsman Saws
https://www.lowes.com/pd/CRAFTSMAN-V...ery/1000730316

This is a badazz little saw with great features and design - bubble level - chain brake.
Puts my old Ryobi 18Volt 10" to total shame - so i bought one to try it out.
Even though i really wanted a 14" saw, they don't have a 14" battery saw in this clearance sale , so i'm going to see how this one does.

I bought one of all 4 , have 30 days (90 on Craftsman) to decide what to keep.
Won't be keeping all of them , i ain't got Oprah money

All my receipts say *MINIMUM RETAIL PRICE APPLIED TO THIS ITEM*

Yeah, if those Kobalts are on sale, for those cheap prices, they are definitely NOT showing the low price online.

This Kobalt that was just a tad over $200, when we were at the Ruston, LA Lowes, is now listed @ $299.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-80-V...ttery/50408238

If we lived closer, I'd go in & see what the in-store price is. But it's about a 40 minute drive.

No they aren't showing those sale prices online.
I was caught by Total Surprise by all this.

The 2Ah 80V 18" is showing $269 when i click your link and it takes me to "my store".
My store shows 0 in stock - but they have 2 more in stock.
I bought it for $155 "in store"

I just tried putting one in "my cart" , and it kept the $269 price at checkout.
Plus $59 shipping
So this is some kind of secret squirrel sale going on , and in-store only.

The 5Ah 80V 18" i bought yesterday had a clearance price sticker right on the box for $279 ... but it rang up for $233

The 12" Craftsman still shows $179 on website
Bought it today for $71 in store

It took going to 3 different stores to find out which ones were super sale items.
And it was pure luck
The department clerks don't even know about all of them.
At the last store in Greensboro i had the department clerk verify the sale prices on all 4 , they only had the GreenWorks saw marked down on the shelf.
He flipped out .
They had 4 more of the 18" 80V 5Ah saws in stock - shelf price still $399 - he scanned it and it showed $233
He really flipped out
Their online inventory shows 0 in stock

I also forgot about 1 other deal
The GreenWorks 16" 60 Volt -SAW ONLY- is $79 versus $199 original price.

If i find out about any more, i will post them.

Might be worth my drive to Lowes. They are not showing any of the 80v saws in stock. I know they had 3, when we were there. I doubt seriously that they sold all 3.

Might also look at a KCS 4040-06 14" 40v Kobalt. Just noticed it. It's the newer brushless type. Looks very similar to the 80v. Different from my 12". Comes with a 4Ah batt. Reviews are good. Should be good for the 6"-8" stuff. We could save the 80v for the 10" & bigger stuff. It should be several lbs lighter than the 80v.

It's listed @ $199, at my Ruston Lowes. But, they're showing 3 in stock. So, they may not be included in the super secret sale.

I had the guy at the last Greensboro store scan the 14" 40V Kobalt and it stayed at $199 {listed shelf price}. So not in the secret squirrel sale ... yet.
That is the one i really wanted - for going up high in the trees.

The GreenWorks saws i listed are already being superseded by Gen II model that are already on the shelves (no discounts on Gen II).

Can't explain the 18" Kobalt or 12" Craftsman being discounted so much.
Guessing the big Kobalt's are about to get an upgrade, and the Craftsman probably being discontinued soon.

The 2 corded electric Craftsman saws were not deep discounted.
One of them (16" or 18") had an advertised $5 price drop, the other (14") was regular shelf price.

Sears is only listing one electric (Craftsman) saw on their website.
The same corded electric (16/18) that Lowes is selling

The 16" 60V GreenWorks is noticeably lighter than the 18" Kobalt.
Good cut numbers and ratings even with 2Ah battery.
Brushless, Chain Brake, 4year/4year warranty

The Greensboro stores were 30 & 40 minutes away from me.
My local Lowes is about 4 minutes from me.
I went to Gboro #1 to get the GreensWork 16" saw, while there - discovered the Craftsman 12" and Kobalt 18" 2Ah were also deep discounted. So it was worth the trip.
Went to Gboro #2 to source another GreensWork 16" for a friend - but they had none.
2 more stores in Gboro but it was too late to go check them.

The skinny bits :

18" Kobalt 5Ah = 15.3 lbs with battery

16" GreenWorks = 12.2 lbs with battery

14" Kobalt = 11 lbs with battery (not on sale)

12" Craftsman = 10.2 lbs with battery

Well guys , its dog eat dog on the clearance prices of these saws.
All i can do is wish you well at your local store.

Spent all this morning running all over with my friend to get him 2 saws - at the RIGHT Price.

Our local Lowes has 2 of the 18" 80Volt 2Ah saws left ,,, but they wouldn't sell another one for the $155 secret squirrel clearance price. Went back up to $269 on it.
But they will still sell the $399 5Ah's for $233 ?
Friend wants the $155 18" deal saw.

A good bit of "discussion" took place with 2 people who were said to be Manager and Asst Manager of the store.
Too much to tell.

So off we go to all 4 Greensboro stores.
Store #1 had a display 2Ah last night, but said they wouldn't sell the displays.
Store 2 , 3 and 4 didn't have one at all.
One was located in Kernersville ... for $195 , too far and too much -- for him.

Store #3 did say he was selling the $399 5Ah's for $219.45
He had 4 of them.
So i bought one - so that i could take the $233 one back to our gracious and loving Asheboro store and tell them to Shove It .

Store #4 had one left of the 16" GreenWorks he wanted for $149

Went back to Store #1 and got a different day shift person.
Talked him into selling me their 18" 2Ah display without a box for $145.
They made special note it was "no-box display" on receipt.
Sold my friend the new one i had in the box for what i paid. $155 + Tax
And we all sang kumbaya

I was just going to use the 18" 2Ah as a guinea pig to see if i liked it and really needed it.
If i like the 18" saw, i plan to only keep the 5Ah anyhow .

The prices are unpredictable amongst the stores.

18" 80Volt with 5Ah can be $279, $233 or $219
18" 80Volt with 2Ah can be $269, $195 or $155
16" 60Volt GreenWork was $149 at all the stores. But none left.
12" 20Volt Craftsman can be $179 , $101 or $71

Good Luck and Happy Hunting

Default We picked up a couple of the Kobalt 18" 80Volt with 2Ah batteries for $149.50 each

Went onto lowes.com on my desktop and searched for 'Kobalt 80v chainsaw'.

Showed up with a 44% discount as being 'clearance' but they wanted $79 to ship it to me.......

Clicked on 'find a store near me' and the price changed back to $269.

Drove to the closest Lowes and asked if they matched online prices. Manager-girl says yes.

Showed her a screen shot of the $149.50 price with the URL. She pops the item number into her computer and it says $269.

Uses the URL and it comes up at the $149.50 CLEARANCE. She looks a little further and finds that another Lowes about twenty miles away has posted the $149.50 price for the one lonesome 2Ah saw they have left in stock.

She agrees to match the price so I don't have to drive all the way across town. Nice girl.

Evidently lowes.com finds the best price on the item and then asks you if you want it shipped (according to the manager-girl) and makes it up on the shipping 'overcharge'.

Charging the batteries tonight and will try one of them tomorrow.

Happy to hear that Joe - She was a nice girl !
With good business smarts too

We tried that, and multiple other legitimate angles with the airheads at our Asheboro store. All they kept doing was getting red-faced and refusing to cooperate.
All the folks at the various Greensboro stores were extremely customer oriented and helpful.

I charged the battery on my 2Ah last night.
Had 1 bar of juice in it, only took about 30 minutes to full charge.
The cooling fan shuts off when its fully charged too

Going by Ponyakr's example, and examples on youtube, these things are silent weapons of mass destruction.

Have been thinking of buying a small chainsaw but can't justify the price of a new gas saw for my needs.

Thread is interesting and useful, thanks all.

Just saw Amazon has a Greenworks 12" 2AH 40V at $114 as part of their PrimeDay sale. Is this a good value? 4 year warranty any good if you actually need it (will the company actually help you or will they tell you to drive 4 hrs to a repair facility)?

tnx in advance

Greenworks is a stable brand. As in they won't be gone tomorrow.
And the tools are quality.
I think its a solid deal for a 40Volt 12" compared with other 12" saws
See if they have the same tool with a 4Ah battery package.

Batteries are usually what go first on a quality tool that isn't abused or neglected.
Their 4 year battery warranty is the best of anyone.
Big Benefit - batteries are crazy money

Mainly though, i wouldn't buy one from a general online seller.
The companies want a legitimate receipt at warranty time.
If Amazon Defacto is the seller - it might be okay.
Contact Greenworks first and verify about point of purchase effects on warranty, and who/how handles the warranty procedures. (dead battery etc ...)

Lowes and Walmart also sell Greenworks

For reference sake - all Kobalt warranty issues are usually resolved right at the counter at Lowes. But the tool has to be bought from Lowes and have a Lowes receipt in-hand at time of the problem.
That is a Big Benefit as opposed to having to ship your old dead battery or broken tool back to manufacturer for verification.
