Default Is this a 64 GTO?

Good evening,

I've always wanted at 64/65. I know this is probably one of those that I should pass on, but it's close, and I just always wanted one. But, I only want it if it's a real GTO. Without getting the PHS do you think it is?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GTO-/...orcev4exp=true

I'll order the PHS if the seller will give me the whole VIN.

Thanks for the help.

5N on the trim tag means GTO..it looks like the tag has never been messed with...good chance it is...

Kansas CIty and Pontiac Mich built cars with 5N are GTOS...but...stuff happens in 50 years...

Real GTO with 99% possibility.

Reasons why:

Correct 4 bbl air cleaner
Correct Radiator (A/C Car)
Correct Power Steering and Alternator
"5N" on the Pontiac Data Plate
Interior is wrong (Door panels and 65 GTO seats)

But it does have power windows, a/c, p/s, auto, radiator shroud, swirl dash, GTO Hood
among other things, JUST THE BODY WOULD TAKE YEARS TO FIX ALL OF THE BODY ISSUES WITH THE CAR.

YOU ARE BUYING A VIN NUMBER BASICALLY.

I'm pathetic, I think they're all worth saving. If I can get it for a decent price I'll spend 3X more than its worth to make it just a driver.

Keeps me out of trouble!

3X will not get you much as a driver.

A LOT of structural damage in that body, forget about the frame that we cannot see.

I agree....it appears to be a very loaded with options original GTO. It's too darn rough to be a clone! That said, it is not restorable, IMO. Parts car. A true shame. Must be right on the beach. Even the dashboard is rusted out!!

You'd be crazy as hell to get involved with a Florida car showing that condition.
There will be so much more you can't see yet.
They just keep doping them and painting them until they crack in half down there.

Did you see the picture showing the radio on the roof ? With silicone shot into the rust holes in the roof ? lmao

The reason the driver door is sagging like that - is most likely frame rot.

If you can re-body it with a donor , and can buy this one cheap .... maybe
But this is a parts car

Some cars that you can buy for a dollar, are not worth restoring. This is one of them.

This car has not had an easy life. As pointed out before it does show the 5N acc code which often did not show up even on true GTOs. Another possible clue could be the engine code on the front of the engine block on the pass side. For an AT 4bbl car I think the code should be 79J. For a car that looks like this I would suspect that it probably needed an engine replacement sometime during its life so beware. And all the other clues like chrome air cleaner and valve covers would be changed over during a engine swap. If the price is really low and you have time for a complete body off with a parts car available (jeeze - it has a rustyy dash?) you might make something out of it.

Well, who got it?

Can't argue with the negative comments, but I think it would be a real shame to part this out. I bet the frame is a LOT better than you think. Under car shots don't look as bad as the roof and dash.

Car was Sunfire Red w/ Ivory Cordova top, I think that may have contributed to the roof rust issues.

No doubt in my mind this is an original GTO and should be very easy to prove by evidence found in/on the car. The PHS will only confirm the VIN tag was originally attached to a GTO, can't prove/disprove a tag swap. But I bet the PHS will also "match" to the rest of the evidence in/on the car.

Never saw a 5 Group code 1S, is that the Remote Decklid Release?

As well equipped as it is, I'm surprised it didn't get the Console option.

I bet the drivetrain is all original, including the Safe-T-Track option rear (you can see the Limited Slip Diff tag in one of the pix).

Options galore on this car:

Custom Seat Belts w/ Retractors
Padded Dash
Tinted Glass, All Windows
Outside Rearview Mirror, Manual
Rally Clock
Two Speed Wiper w/ Washer
A/C
Auto Trans
Cordova Top
Safe-T-Track
Remote Decklid Release
Power Windows
Power Steering
Power Brakes

Who got it and what's the plan??!!

I know that car very well and have known of it for 20+ years. Past owner bought it when an old woman traded it in to the dealership he worked at in the late 60s or earl 70s. He was a mechanic, and drove it and maintained it as a regular car up to a couple years or so ago when he passed away. The body was rusty 20 years ago and the repairs were fiberglass and bondo oriented. His sons were left the car and decided to sell it. I was offered the car but refused to make an offer because it would have been insulting. The new owner of this car is going to be very disapppointed.

We need more people like you who want to save all the real GTOs that are left. There will always be repop parts to fix them up but, only so many real ones left. You are right on in your thinking.

Yeah, when you see a GTO optioned like this, it was ordered for a woman. someones wife of a young secretary. Nothing wrong with that at all, just an observation.

I've bought several old Pontiacs just to save them from being crushed. You would be surprised, over the years and decades, what people will justify as a 'parts car'.

To part out that special 64 GTO would be criminal IMO. Glad it was saved. Sure, a lot of work but, where else can you find a complete 64 GTO for that kind of money. Now, build it the way you want it and on your schedule. You done good saving it!
