Get some hi-res pics of that inspection sticker in case you need to get a replacement made later on. And maybe score a vintage 71 or 72 NC license plate to run.

Ditto. That's what I was asking in my last post. Love the background stories on these types of cars.

Ok guys, here are some documents. There is much more documentation. I have redacted the VIN and the original owner's name at the request of the family who wishes to remain anonymous. I will be posting the trade in agreement, window sticker, dealer invoice copy, protect-o-plate envelope and correspondence (yes, I have the plate) and lastly, the thank you note from Pontiac, MI. Thanks.

Your GTO is similar to the one I have. The Purchase Agreement for mine shows Close Ratio 4 Speed like your Trade in Agreement but your window sticker and mine show code 779 which as John V explained is a wide ratio 4 speed. I talked to the original owner of my GTO, he did order the close ratio 4 speed but the car came with a wide ratio, the dealer changed it for him after he noticed the difference.

I think we can all agree that this is the '65 we would have bought new, if we could have. Pretty much leaves nothing to be desired. The coupe de grace is tinted glass all the way around. I installed soft ray glass all the way around on my own '65 about 30 years ago....these cars look much nicer with it, IMO. VERY HAPPY to hear you are going to keep it as a survivor car and not going to restore it. It's too rare for that! Please tell us the rest of the story...its history and how on earth you found it!!

I noticed Baron Von Zeppelin posted the PHS for his 65 in another thread and it also is a WS 3.90 geared car with the code 779 transmission.

Ok So now I'm really confused . I've had 3 65s not counting the WS I bought a few years back . I know none of them had a notched fan on them and one of those I did buy from the original owner and was a power steering car . non of the cars had the 3.90 rears . even the ws I have now came with the 3.55 and non power quick ratio steering . The thing is I've never seen a notched fan on the cars I've had and that's something I would have remembered because it would have been different . The Lemans and tempest with the 326 have the same timing cover and water pump and alternator mounting brackets and none of those fans were notched . I still have two parts cars here and both of them were purchased from the original owners . for years they sat here unmolested but I've been stripping them now . So did just the low ratio 3.90 and 4.33 come with the notched fans and the 3.55 3.23 and higher come with the fans the tempests and le mans came with ?

To get back on topic with this thread this 65 was an incredible find and I wouldn't change a thing not even the fan at this point . The original owner is available to talk to and that's is the best source for this particular car . We all know from past experiences not all of these cars were created equally . If the original owner says the fan was never changed and the repair sheet is available and there is no mention of it being changed I would leave it as it is . you have the documentation . My 56 Thunderbird never had the sun visors put in they are listed B/O on the invoice sticker I have and there are no screw holes in the windshield frame where they would have been attached . They were never put in . I've been questioned about it , showed the paper work how can anyone refute it . It was a factory screw up . the same situation could apply here. look at the cowl tags with wrong stampings , not all these cars were perfect they were built by humans . You have a true survivor car here .

The reason the fan was notched is because it has a greater pitch. 2-3/16" vs. 1-7/8" if I remember right. Wouldn't the same HD fan be used for all 3:90 rear cars whether or not it had PS? The steeper pitch moves more air.

By the way Tarheel, great find! Tell us more!
