Default 64 GTO restoration, FINALLY!

Well, after owning this car for 16 years[longer than I have owned any car], and never having driven it, it is finally off to get a rolling chassis and body work done.

I started to restore this car many years ago, and with the help of board member and friend of mine, twooldgoats, we got the floor pans installed and welded in, but ran into a snag with missing trunk panel pieces. I ordered and received them, but just really never made the time to finish the job. Life just kind of got in the way. Then the stuff starts piling up inside of it and all around it. The cats use it for shelter. Then it just gets worse. I've looked at this car for 16 years sitting on stands in my carport, and just kept thinking, "one day, it'll run again".

One day at work I was sitting there talking to fellow Pontiacker and friend Mike, about my GTO. He offered to help me get it to a rolling chassis so I could finish it up. We worked out a deal that is good for both of us.

Well, Saturday was the day I hauled it up to the Phoenix area to Mike's house. This is the first day in 16 years that there has not been the GTO in there. It's really weird, kind of eerie. I miss it already. I have a shed full of new parts for it to start putting back on it when I get it back.

This is awesome! Finally the dream of driving it may actually come true.

I got disk brakes to put back on. Poly graphite bushings. 1" front sway bar, and a 7/8" rear. New black interior kit, and other stuff.

I'm not experienced at body work but I can do anything else pretty much. I say that because I have never done interior work like seat upholstery and headliners, but I ask questions when I need answers and am sure I can handle that with the proper guidance. I have a lot of friends who know different stuff I can get help with when needed.

A customer of our shop heard me talking about getting my car up to Phoenix and immediately offered to take it up there with me in his enclosed trailer and his dually diesel truck. That made it much easier. That was great of him to do that for me. It took 6 of us to lift the body up and get it down onto two moving dollies[the type that are flat with 4 wheels], and we were able to roll it out of my carport, into my asphalt driveway, turn it around, and roll it up into the trailer. Never thought it would roll in that rough, nasty asphalt, but it did it easily.

Now to sort out and build me a nasty 400 for it. I have a Furd 9" rear I'm going to build[with the help of another friend] for it. I have a Muncie 4 speed, but not sure how long that will hold up so I need to save for a good tranny after I get my major engine parts. Luckily, I don't have to pay for machine work or Cryo treatment!

I'm so psyched up about the GTO, I probably won't get any sleep.

Oh, and yes, it's a real PHS documented GTO. Originally a 389 4 bbl, 4 speed car. IIRC, it had 3.23 gears. Not going back that way though.

Interesting story on how I got this car.

A friend of mine was driving down the road one day and he glanced over at the local high school. Sitting there in their auto shop yard was this GTO. He stopped in and talked to the auto shop teacher to see what the deal was with it. The teacher told him that some guy donated it to the school, but since it was so old, he felt the kids couldn't get any real practical experience from working on it[I disagree]. My friend asked if he would sell it. The teacher told him $500 so he bought it. They didn't have a title for it though, or lost it, so he didn't get a title with it. He told me that if I wanted it, he would sell it to me for the $500 he had into it, so I bought it. It had $800 worth of new parts in the trunk. My friend went back to the school to see about getting a title and somehow, they came up with one and I transferred it into my name! Done deal!

It was already taken apart, and the body was sitting on the frame with the interior full of the parts that were taken off.

Having bought mine as a rolling project, I can only hope your first day of driving is as exciting as mine was.

This is the day I brought mine home (June 1992):

My wife said, "Just get it done!".

I also had to do the floors and the trunk:

I was a little quicker than you - I drove mine for the first time in October 1994 (not totally done, but I had a huge grin on my face).

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Wow! My rusty trunk and floor pans weren't quite that bad. Glad you saved it and didn't let it get scrapped. That's cool, and a convertible too!

Street/strip car. I didn't have the original drivetrain, so I am going to hotrod it. I want it fast! I have a black interior. I am thinking about painting it a shade of Charcoal gray metallic, with two black stripes coming off the hood scoops and going rearward over the roof and trunk. Seriously now, tell me, does that sound too Chevy'ish? I hope not. I don't want it looking like a Chevy.

I have a 67 400 engine I want to build for it with some 67 670 heads. Manual trans and probably a 4:11 rear end gear.

I didn't know how bad the trunk was until I took out the sheet metal that they had just screwed in over the rusted trunk. Probably just accelerated the rust that was already there.

Did you notice the fancy gas tank supportsystem? Blue nylon rope...

I paid $600.00 for the entire car. The hood was worth more than that. Also got the original #'s matching Muncie and a '68 400 (which was replaced with a numbers matching 389).

Mike is making progress quickly. He's got the 1/4 panels almost done.

WOW Paul! How awesome is this, restoring a 64 you've had that long.
You guys got a good bunch of GTO "freeks" out there in Arizona.
Paul, if I could make one suggestion it would be ......get a photo bucket account so you can post those pictures up big and not just thumbnails. It's really so easy with a smart phone.
I am so full if crap though, I would never keep it to just one suggestion
I don't like the idea of the stripes personally BUT, if that's what you want do it! Give it your own personal style.
Look forward to seeing the progress........
hopefully with big pictures
