Default 400 or 428 ?

I'll be going to pull a 67 bonneville motor tomorrow. I just realized I took the sellers word that the engine is a 400. I never checked the block codes. I just assumed since it had the 4bbl it was no doubt a 400. What are the chances it's really a 428 ? Would there be any visual clues ? I can't check the number till I get there tomorrow.

Default bonneville engine

I think that '67 and '68's had a 428 fender emblem on them if they had the 428 motor as well as a 428 emblem on the fan shroud.

Pyramid thingie cast in the back-top of block, near the dist., indicates non-400 I think. Quickest check, but it could also be a 350.

A 4-bbl manifold means nothing anymore--it could have been changed years ago.

Indicates that it is not a 389/400. All other motors have the 'transfer lug'.

I just found a '72 YH 455 with a 2bbl. Never knew it existed. All casting numbers, date codes, cylinder head codes, etc jive. I pretty much gaffed it off as a replacement motor. I got home, did some research and found it does exist. Now I'm trying to figure how I'm gonna get it out of there...

I thought Pontiac cast the displacement on the side of the block? Or was just for certain years?

67 428's had "670" heads same as 400. Best to go by the engine code on front of block, and other clues already mentioned.

Tod, sky hook or C4 should do it. Or bring friends along to lift it up. Good luck... it is doable if yer into S&M. LOL

Get the 2 digit code from the front of the right cylinder bank, and the date code from behind the distributor (in case the engine has been changed). Or the casting number from the location shown below.
