Default 67 G/P Sport wheel coloring

Have decided to try and restore this fuaux plastic/wood grained/colored wheel textured sport wheel myself. Bought Eastwoods kit and book. Kit will probably do the trick ok but the $12.00 book sucks. I think my 101 year old Grandpa had a hand in writing the text.

Crazy maybe, but at $1,000.00 for a professional Restoration or $450 for an imported repop I am going to try.

Can anyone tell me what shade or texture they are supposed to be. Maybe send me a picture of a correctly done steering wheel?

Been doing restorations for 30 years but first shot a steering wheel.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike Pemberton

Mike, I've had two Custom Sport steering wheels recast by Performance Years. Both came out absolutely great! Check out their catalog for this outstanding service. I hope that they are still able to get this done. The price was around $200.

Mike,

Do you get to specify what shade or type of stain and finish you want on your wheel? I was looking for a place that would take an unfinished wheel and stain it to match the shade of my wood dash inserts. This is the biggest drawback to most of the wooden sport wheels that you can buy....they just don't match the wooden dash inserts at all.

The color of the Custom Sport wheel never did match the grain color of the instrument panel, or the Custom Shift Knob either for that matter.

The best thing about the recasting technique is that the grain and the finger joints in the "wood" wheel are reproduced perfectly; something that simply recoloring a used wheel will not achieve.

Default Wheel is back

Sorry I didn't respond sooner.

Seems like the guy who was doing these wheels got a little behind or was getting a 2 month BJ.

The cost has gone up about $50.

Got it back while I was on vacation about two weeks ago, only 2 months later than expected.

The BJ must have worked though as it came out great.

Thanks again for the lead and information.

Mike,

How about posting a few pics for us? Thanks!

Wayne

P.S. You had the wheel done through Performance Years correct? Do they re-ship it out to someone? If so, who do they use? If it cost an additional $50 then your total price was $250 plus shipping, correct?

Default 67 GP Sport wheel to PY for Restoration

The cost is now $267.00 including shipping (or it was 4 months ago).

P/Y sends them out, to who I have not got a clue.

I am sure they stand behind this guys work.

As you can see it really is a close to original as it can be. It's not 100%--more like a 97% piece. The parts that are sub-standard are around the bottom/inside part by the spokes where it will not be seen.

I would send another one to be done if necessary.

I found a guy that would do real wood for $1,000.00. I am not Donald Trump so $267.00 works for me.

Here are 4 pictures.

Does anyone know how best to tell the difference between a real wood wheel and one that has been reproduced. Theres always wheels for sales on ebay and i want to get one but only if its the real thing. (for 67 only)

Because the recast wheels are using the original metal framework of the 40+ year old wheel, any differences between an N.O.S. '67 Custom Sports wheel and a freshly recast '67 wheel would be impossible to determine on an Ebay auction. I'm not sure that a personal inspection would be an easy determination. The recast wheels are going to have some "patina" due to wear and tear on the metal spokes and hub, but you can't easily see that detail on an auction site. I've never seen an N.O.S. wheel and a recast wheel side by side, so I can't attest to the accuracy of the recast wheel's coloration.

I had PY do a 67 wheel for a local guy that bought the wheel from me. He had it on his car for a few weeks, only drove the car to a couple of local shows and stored the car in a garage. The wheel started having 1/4" - 3/8" pieces of the graining/coloring fall off, have no idea why. Wheel is/was sent back to PY to be recast or refinisned, Chris takes care of problems. I've had several other wheels done by PY over the years and no problems, think this one was an oddball.
