GP's Restoration................
Hi Clay,
Thanks for the comps. Yes, the door panels were redone by Just Dashes @ a cost of only $1000 . When I started the GP project I intended to achieve a nice driver level restoration, but the car was so nice once the new paint was rubbed out that the split door panel armrests were going to seriously detract from the car's appearance. I currently have the GTO's trips mounted, but I am assembling a Offy intake w/dual 625cfm AFBs for our trip to the POCI Nats. in Tulsa this July. Les

Mine finally went to a good home. IMO, 68s are very under valued. Even very nice ones like Les' seem to go about half of what you would see for just about any other model. I always figured my 68 GP was what all GTOs wanted to be when they grew up.

we've got a '68 bonneville, 428 4spd with doorpanels that are almost exactly the same - scary what that little crack would cost to get rid of
and just picked up a '68 grand prix 428 4spd that's awful rough i'm trying to resist the temptation to part it but restoring these suckers with the inavailability of quarters and other parts....is downright crazy

That was not my GP at PH, I didnt make it this year, way to sick. Hated not going to something I look forward to all year. Sorry I missed everyone. I had planned to debut my new 482HiPort in the 64 GTO I bought from TwoOldGoats. I just hope it will be as reliable as Les' new 66.
My 428 GP went to Dave Erickson in Indiana, he wanted it for several years, finally made it happen. He paid too much and I sold for too little. It would be a "rustfree" car in the midwest and a "rustbucket" around here. LOL All in all a pretty straight car and driveable but really worn out. He will do a good job restoring it. Baron, a 428 4sp? Just do it! forget the quarters, just weld in where it needs it. That car needs saving. Easy resto if you say it fast. (8-) Last edited by BVR421; 05-08-2008 at 03:04 PM. |

Rich,
Thanks for the kind words, I am excited to get the 'ol GP back into running condition. I am glad it finally worked out, it only took 7 1/2 years...LOL. Clay, Green was the "it" color in the late 60s-early 70s much like other colors (remember Teal in the 90s?) have had their turn. There were I believe 3 different shades of Green offered in 68, Springmist Green (light), Verdoro Green (meduim), and Midnight Green (dark). Yours look to be Midnight Green, but I'm not sure. There is a mint, one-owner, low mileage 68 428 4spd in Ohio, it is Verdoro Green with a Black top and interior. It was in HPP magazine, and I know it has been to Norwalk. Where did you find yours? I'd still like to see more of it. I think the Bonneville door panels differ because the Bonnies had vent windows. Dave

Clay,
I have been diggin' on that GP for a couple of years now, ever since my son found the website. I agree it is a cool site, and that GP is one of my all-time favorite cars. Looks like it is either Meridian Turquoise or Aleutian blue (my favorite '68 color), and is one of the nastiest sounding GPs ever! BTW, looks like your GP has the optional painted pinstripe instead of the riveted on bodyside molding, at least the left front fender looks like it has pinstripe. Daver

Thanks for the comps guys. The GP your talking about is mine. It is Aleutian Blue with matching interior. I've owned it since 1987 and did a complete frame off about 11 years ago. Performance years knows me well. It is a #'s matching car and I varified it with PHS. I'm glad to see there are a few of us out there that like the big cars.
Dave. I'll e-mail ya later Dave, I have to go blast a Turkey this weekend. |

Welcome to the PY boards, Dave. I look forward to hearing from you. I kinda thought it might be Aleutian Blue I/O, the ultimate color combo 68 GP for me. Dave

Anyway, thought I'd post a pic of my buddy's 68 GP 428 4speed car. Solar red with black interior. I took this picture a couple of years ago. His z bar snapped at a local evening show and he got it towed to my place (insurance covered first 25mi of towing). I took the pic the next day to show him that his car was safe and I had my best guard dog on it!
