I think '67 or '68 was the last year for the cone shaped lens. It was mounted on top of the inner fender on the passenger side. In '69 the lens was the one used on the reel out trunk lights. Some of those lens seem to have some red paint residue on them but not to the extent that the cone shaped lens did where you can see that they were half red and half clear. The mounting bracket was moved up front to the radiator support as well. I don't know what the last year for the reel out lights was.

Don't know if this is bases for a conclusive use in '69 but the accessories cat does show a coned shape service/reel-out light.
And I do agree this was the last year for the lights, as I have never found any in a 70+

Jeff, good catch on the Catalog picture. I never noticed that before. I have never seen a cone shaped lens on a '69 so I just assumed they were not used.
Any info on the red paint. I have seen and had several puck style lens that had the remnants of red paint on them but not like the half and half arrangement on the cone shaped lens. BTW...PM me about where you are in VA Beach. I am up the road in Fredericksburg VA

Here's some pictures of my '67 hockey puck style reel out light. There is red on only half of it? I know '67 light brackets on had 2 mounting points. '66 and older had 4 mounting holes. I cleaned it up, with new red paint and installed it in my '67 GP for now. There was holes already in the fender well. Maybe at on time it had one installed on it???

There's a little switch than is mounted on a bracket on the pass. side if the firewall. Then from there, gets it's power from the fuse block.

FWIW;
Here is an NOS SW underhood kit. Unfortunately don't have copies of the installation sheet.

In the service manual there will be a diagram that shows how the wiring is routed and where the wire retainer clips go along the inside of the fender.
Thanks for the pictures. I never realized that the red paint on the lens was only on the side. I just figured that the paint on the top of the lens had worn off over the years.

the actual switch can be obtained from a GM dealership. The wiring is easy as well. The hardest part to find is the switch bracket but they are out there in junk yards. Same part was used in many GM cars.

Is there a difference between the under hood light switch and the brake light switch that is activated when you push the brake pedal? They sure look similar.

I doubt it. It was just a simple switch that was common to GM cars. The only thing you have to do is get the switch height correct in the bracket so that the light turns off when the hood is closed. That is what the height adjustment locking nuts are for.
