Default rear quarter window mech/rollers

Hi all,

Trying to debug why my rear quarter windows are so difficult to move up and down. Removed inner rear panel. Things seem to be in order but I did notice there are essentially three rollers. A small roller moves horizontally. This one seems to turn. There are two other, larger rollers mounted to the window itself. One doesn't turn at all, I assume its not designed to turn as it slides in a track that straddles both sides of the roller. The other roller turns intermittently.

Not sure if that is the source of the problem or they just need to be lubed? I assume replacing that one roller would require R&R of the window. I sprayed some lithium grease on the tracks and rollers. Seemed to help. Wondering if the lithium grease maybe isn't thick enough and I should be using wheel bearing grease or something similar?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Yes, 3 rollers, which have like pancake/washer type 'nuts' that capture the glass. The bottom of the track has a 'Y' opening, where that roller can come out.

If you roll the glass half down, and remove the pancake nut, you can tip the glass away enough to slide that roller down and remove/replace it.

Honestly though, it's best to just do them all. The regulators are available too, and are not expensive, same with the rollers and other hardware.

You can mark where the stops and adjustment bolts are currently, which makes it much easier to reinstall.

Here you can see the 'pancake washer' that is circled in red. A special tool is made for those, and although you will rarely use it, it's worth the money, especially if it's never been apart.

The 'Y' exit is marked with the red arrow.

The service manual is pretty worthless, but it's kind of self-explanatory.

By the way, all the rollers should turn, even if the one you're talking about is kind of 'captured' on 2 side.

Here's the page out of the Ames catalog, can see rollers, washers, etc, as well as the tool...

Regulators are $75ea.

I pulled out and installed the glass, regulator, and tracks as one assembly. It's a little tricky, it's like those wire puzzles, but not too bad. You can figure it out.

Yep. First one took me several hours. Second one about 5 minutes.

Thanks - I was referencing the quarter glass and regulators/rollers... These are Ames part #J135k, #j135M, etc. No biggie.

I was hoping better grease would just solve the problem. Not really in the mood to rebuild the whole assembly. Rats. - But thanks for all the info!

I did all the hardware, rollers, regulators, and new glass. Wow, I'm glad I did, makes such a big difference, it's amazing.

Might not be for all, but figured I'd comment.
