(Not to take anything away from Pete, but) If you are inclined to try it yourself you can contact these guys and see if they have a quartz kit:
https://www.clocksandgauges.com/ It's kind of satisfying to fix it on your own; Just make sure the kids and the dog are not around when you do the upgrade, because it does take some focused attention. K

Or Bob's Speedometer. I had my '57 speedo rebuilt be them last month. Quick service. They advertise that they do clock conversions as well.

If you decide to replace the whole thing, Ames has one listed in their catalog that is equipped with a modern quartz movement.

or, try cleaning the one you have. Take the thing apart, spray the back of it with electrical cleaner, turn it several times, spray again. Sand down the points contacts, spray with your favorite lube (WD or other spray lubricant) Turn it several times and see if it works. I have had great luck cleaning them.

If you want a bone stock clock, that the second hand clicks one second at a time (as opposed to just constant, even movement) then clean and fix it. But quartz clocks are dead on accurate. They don't add or lose time. It is nearly impossible to get the factory movement anywhere close to accurate. It needs reset a couple minutes regularly.

I used to fix my clocks by removing the bulb and spraying WD 40 inside and tapping them. That was it & 90% worked after that.

Fire hazard !
Quote:
I took the clock apart on the bench like 63gpman suggested and sprayed it and blew it clear several times , then sprayed it again and hooked it up to a battery. It started to run , so I figured let it run for an hour or so , but within seconds it started to smoke. Ripped the contacts loose really fast so no harm was done. The abundance of lube on the mechanisme caused a short circuit. On the bench you can blow the greater part of the lube out and be done with it , but if this happened in your car you could end up burning everything down. These old electrics keep giving me the creeps. Cheers , Bob. |

Bobs Speedo has the kits, do it your self. It’s easy.
