'64 GTO vs. '69 Camaro
As I was leaving the Back to the '50's show last Friday about 7 PM, there were hundreds of people in lawn chairs that traditionally line up along Snelling Ave. to see the cars leaving the fairgrounds. This way, they save the $10 ticket cost and get to see most of the cars. At this show, they require that you leave the fairgrounds each night.
Anyhow, as I drove out of the fairgrounds, I had to stop at the first stoplight as it turned red. A red '69 Camaro pulled up the light in the next lane. Lumpy idle, stock exhaust, nice car. When the light turned green, we left normally, but about halfway through first gear, we went full throttle at the same time. We ran even until the 1-2 shift, when I pulled him by 1/2 a length. Same on the 2-3 shift--another 1/2 length. Since it was a 45 mph speed limit, I backed off soon after I was in 3rd gear. Sure felt like the old days!! I'm sure the guy in the Camaro was surprised that a PONTIAC dusted him off--at least that's what the look on his face said! I'm sure the people on the lawn chairs liked it--at least everyone but the Chevrolet fans. I pulled into the nearest parking lot and turned my alternator belt over as it always goes sideways when the engine goes above 5,000 rpm.

Not easy to back off when you're only a length ahead!! The key is to back off quickly so the guy (and the lawn chair people) don't think he won!!
You definitely have to be a car guy to understand that logic!!

Love it! I had a very nice black 70 chevelle ss run up beside me in my 67 Firebird and throttle up and down egging a race. I downshifted and we slowed to 2nd gear in my 4 speed. nailed it at the same time, boom, i pulled a car, hit 3rd and was walking away fast. we stopped beside each other at the light and the fella was in shock and wide eyed and says "whats in that!!????" i proudly proclaimed "455 pontiac!" he'll remember that forever.
he had no idea I had a well built 455, 3.73, rock crusher 4 speed in a clean stock looking firebird. lol ahhhhh loved it, always sweeter when its a chebby! |

A month after my '69 Camaro race, I still smile when thinking about it. My brother-in-law, who was along for the ride, is still exclaiming about my shifts. He's 60 and I'm 69. I guess he thinks you forget how to pull good shifts!!
