Looks like its been milled .. and I have seen a 7 used for a 1 where many 1's were needed, but this one looks a bit too odd.

Sometimes the VIN numbers are nearly impossible to read.
I have a 1971 YE 455HO block that is ultra low miles, and the VIN is impossible to read. A friend of mine worked as a mechanic at a Pontiac dealership in Charlotte NC. Whenever a car with a 4-bolt main block came in for warranty replacement, he grabbed the block and saved it. This block probably has less than 12K miles on it when the block was replaced under warranty. It has been on a shelf since about 1984, so I am pretty sure nobody ever milled it. I think the VINs were hand stamped. I have seen a couple that were stamped heavier at the top than the bottom, and vice versa. I even had one 455HO block that was stamped YE, but had absolutely no VIN stamped into the block anywhere. The block in the photo was greased and wrapped in plastic. I tore enough of the plastic away to reveal the VIN and engine code. Mike |

That surface on every Pontiac is a machined surface. Here are the stamping on my 70

What is the car?

my 1970-YZ engine has the vin stamped twice;
once is a weak half stamped one, the second is further from the timing chain housing, and is much easier to read.

What I've seen is the stamp that's to be a I has a curve on it like the seven? But, it's not a complete 7.

Craig, your machining all goes in one direction. That was my curiosity on the OP's Block number area. His has more than one milling machine marking
