Been thru 4 GM goodwrench trans.
thank goodness warranty is great.
thos L 67s are tough on trannys.
Dont even try to use the 4t60e in place of the 4t65e
if the 65 wont hold up in use the 60 sure wont.
Newer GTPs with the 303HP V-8 must have solved at least some of the problems as I havent heard of any issues.
If you want a tranny thats going to hold up to abuse get an aftermarket one at about $2200.
If not and you beat on it its going to fail again.

Agree with Cammer. I had SERIOUS problems with my tranny in my 02 GTP. Go with an a rebuilt one that is built for the power.

I think the main problem with them is they are sooo easy to squeeze more out of(pulley change) and bang the tranny goes.
I sold a 99 GTP last year that had over 100K on it and oddly nuff was a undercover car(plain brown wrapper) tranny was perfect as was rest of drivetrain, and had service record since day 1,never any tranny problems.
Im sure it was "leaned" on but never boosted above stock. GM says the new GM goodwrench remans are good for 300 ft# of torque but I dont believe it.
Monstr hope you got a killer deal on it.
PM me for more details on the mods to make tranny live.

BTW I have a modded PCM for a 99 GTP that ups the shift a couple hundred and removes the TC codes.
I did that on my 99 but put stock pcm back in when sold.
$65 plus shipping.
also have some new sunvisors with built in homelink . Only came on the SLP cars. And lastly a brand new service manual set for 99 GPs

Cool 99 gtp

it's a 99 gtp 2 dr. red w/graphie interior. original owner car with 162k on the clock. power whole. super clean car, especially for a nothern ohio car. lady driven, husband had insurance company. some new parts including tires. no receipts before 100k though. runs beautiful and smooth, no noises other than the tranny whineing. paid 1500.00 for it. i think i stole it! tranny moves the car untill the temp gauge moves. than it's over with, start pushing! i'm going with a used one for the moment, hopefully it works out long enough so ican drive it a while and evaluate the true condition. then look out, lots of mods! does the 4t65e tranny have any specific marks or codes i should look for while purchasing? i really want to swap the hood with something way cooler. ofcourse the tradional upgrades to, pulley, ram air, t-stat, headers and exhaust. what do you recommend? never tried to hot rod a fwd before so its kinda new to me. thanks, pontiacmonstr

IN a word dont soup it up.
FWD sucks as a performance car.
This is a real nice car but has its limits.
leave it stock and enjoy it.
Soup it up and youll be sorely disappointed.
If youre going to soup it up the tranny is the first upgrade to do
and since yours needs replaced anyway......
Shops nomally get $3K for tranny job with a good warranty.
I sold my 99 for $5400 one year ago and it had no big issues.

First was the original, I think.

the second was a GM replacement, so yes, goodwrench reman.

Yep, but it still pissed me off enough that I eventually got rid of it. The first tranny let go at 37k miles and the second less than 10k miles

my 00 model gtp daytona pace car ate the trans at 22,000 miles. It is still sitting in the yard after two years. I was thinking the other day about putting a trans in it. Jim M.

my stock 02' 40th w/supercharger has over 50k, not rea hard on it but not easy either. I traded in my 99'GTP with 40K never had tranny trouble, I did beat on that one pretty good. They had a rebuild upgrade in HPP a ways back that added posi to the trans. Was supposed to handle more power too. Dave K.

But none are cheap.
I know of only 2 that do a limited slip diffy.

I have a 2000 GTP/GTX with 116K on it - original trans. It does slip some so I don't beat on it as much anymore (daily transportation). I put on a slightly smaller pulley and a computer - well worth it, but I agree, upgrade the trans, then do some little mods.
