Hi,

I have a 69 WG engine out of a big car. I believe the car was a 69 Ventura.

The WG is a manual tranny coded engine. It is a 360HP 428, but it has #62 heads. I confirmed through some of my documentation that the #62 heads are correct. Without pulling the pan, I'm trying to determine if it is also a 4-bolt main. According to one source, it should have 4-bolt main caps. Another source isn't specific about whether it should have 2-bolt or 4-bolt bottom end. I know the 360 HP 428s are 2-bolt main bottom ends with #46 small valve heads.

Does anybody have any documentation that would indicate if this is a 4-bolt or 2-bolt bottom end?

MIke

The 16 and 62 heads were interchangable and both are correct for that year. You have checked and know that the 62's are correct. Pete's book says 16's would be the correct head. I have a 69 Bonneville that came with the YK 428 HO engine. It too is specified to have 16 heads on it but the car came with 62's. CC's are the same, valves are the same and they flow about the same. weird stuff but true!!!

I have had three different 428's over the years, 1 68 and 2 69's all three were 4 bolt blocks, but only one had 4 bolt caps. The other 428 blocks I have seen were all 4 bolt but the caps were usually 2 bolt.
Also Pontiac was all over the board on heads that were the same # but they often had varied cc sizes and information is sketchy as to why? Some think it had to do with trying to get around insurance company concerns...

According to eveything I have found, WG is the only engine code that would be a four bolt main block in every year that WG was used.

I had a couple of 70 400's and they were drilled four bolt but only had two bolt Caps on it. I've heard that the 455's were that way too for a while. I've also heard that most 428s in 67 were only 2 bolt blocks. I have a 69 428 Factory Replacement block out back that was 370 hp. it has 4 bolt caps. FR blocks had no markings, just casting marks. 69 HO block is of course 4 bolt as listed above.
