disturbing pictures.
when i had my oil pan off of my car i saw these grind marks on my crankshaft
why would a machine shop do something like this? the motor was rebuilt, zero miles when i bought the car. the machine shop that did the work is out of business, go figure. Looks like material was removed to balance the crank assy. Kind of crude, but isn't that what this is?

i would not worry about it. usually you see core holes drilled to affect balancing, but i guess this is another option
