There is s special socket bit available (cheap) at parts stores that fits. I bought several and leave one in that space under the center cap on all my cars.

Went to 3 auto parts stores and Sears and the kids there didn't have a clue. Finally bought a screwdriver #2 square bit at sears and filed fit.

Would like to find a standard hub setup like the attached.

Good luck. I've found only bits here and there for the standard wheels.

I think they are called "clutch head" screws. Used in quite a few places on very very early Corvettes. John

Was the standard ornament hub painted the same color as the wheel or chrome? I have the deluxe and it is fine, just looking for something different. While I'm in there, I will tend to the sloppy 63 turn signal switch.

"clutch drive" bit. not used very often. usually sold in sets. they are available, but usually NOT in reg. auto parts types stores. On line is your best bet to get them. for 1 time use? make the tool and save the money.

Except for the badging, much of the steering wheel and column is the same as Corvair. Clutch head screws are all over Corsas, Rampsides and Greenbriers. Assuming that horn button fastener is the same size, if you want a better fit than a filed screwdriver, Clark's Corvair Parts Inc sells a 5/16" clutch head bit for $9.95 or 2+ for $8.95, part #C12649.

http://www.corvair.com/user-cgi/search.cgi?part=C12649

I'm doing final assembly on a Greenbrier for a client right now and will probably need them anyway, so I'll order a couple and check the sizing on my Tempest column.

Holley carbs used the clutch head screws for the jet plate. Get a Holley tool. Snap on used to have them. My dealer just brought me two sizes.

I made mine for 2 bucks from a ground down swap meet flathead. Couldn't tell ya how many Tempest wheels it has worked on. How much does Snap On sell it for? --

Don't know, he just gave them to me.. He said they would never sell. I made a couple through the years also when mine was missing.

Free Snap-On is hard to beat!

Here are some other options. As hand drivers and 3/8" sockets.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1928-1992-Cl...-/281101341316

http://www.amazon.com/CTA-Tools-8755...xp_grid_pt_0_1

Looks like the Corvair and Buick Special/Skylark uses two different sizes. The bigger size is 5/16" and the smaller is 3/16", which is what's on the 61-63 Tempest column.

Why is resto on one of those wheels $1200? Is the epoxy made of taaffeite? I have a red custom wheel, but it's pretty faded. Tempest has a black interior. Could I change it to black or would it be better to trade it for a black one?

this is good karma. I just found a clutch head screw on the floor of my 61 Cat. It came from the power seat track. I didn't have that size, so I ordered the 3/8 socket set.. Thanks for the lead.

Life is good.

Is that convert in the photo your Cat? Very nice ride.

Corvair seems to have 5/16" clutch head screws on the floor and interior body panels. You should be covered.

Sure is, but, coming back from a car show, and another trophy, on Feb 2, I got 2 blocks and a dam yankee ran a red light and hit my right rear. It's in the body shop now, and waiting for a rear bumper and straightening. Should be even nicer than before as we are painting the whole car.

I found the Ornament (part number 539563) and the spacer. I do not think I have the receiver cup. I will look again tomorrow. Its a "driver" condition part but at least I had one.

IMHO, there is no need to buy a full set, this is the only place on the car this type of head is used. I made mine taking a file to a $2 part. I will not reassemble as tight as it was.

Here is a shot of my NOS wheel (rusty hub) compared to my car's original cracked wheel (clean hub). How should I get rid of the rust.....sandblasting? I can't imagine the corrosion is good for the horn contact nor the splines.
