Definitely had some sort of PMD Use before being to sold to that dealer. And it would have been a very early 70 model production too. Goatman, this was Invoice #2 for this car. You should email or call Jim Mattison at PHS and see if Invoice #1 is still on file. Most of the time these multi-invoice cars still have more than 1 invoice within the archives, and sometimes not. Definitely worth making contact to see. It won't necessarily increase its value as it sits. But could -usually does- increase interest levels in a car. Also, if you find a decent copy of buildsheet on top of gas tank - it will tell along the bottom ledger which department and/or executive the car was built for. This will generate higher probability for the car to get a good restoration too. |

Johnta1 brought up an interesting coincidence about the dealer/zone number on your Invoice. The 50-001
Only 1 other example known , and it was a 3 Invoice vehicle. 50-001 is not a dealership code. We don't know yet what it really is, or means. I didn't pay it much thought at first glances , about the "dealer code". I also downloaded and exploded view of Invoice, and can't make out the hand written memo. Also noticed the 4% MST $152.03 is not a credit. Initially i thought it had a " - " next to it. It's actually sort of looking like it was maybe still a new car. Unless the hand memo shows a discount amount. And like Enoch Eley bought it straight from PMD ... somehow. The invoice code shows it was paid by Cash/Check. All cars were supposed to go through a dealer or the Pontiac Retail Store. We might really learn something new from this example of yours. Thinking Enoch Eley may have been a real big-shot at PMD or something. Checking for another Invoice - and finding the Buildsheet - would answer more things. I hope you have interest in pursuing the trail. What is the body build date on the Cowl Tag ? for example 09A or 09D or 10A ... etc Thanks man |

MST may mean Michigan State Tax.
Enoch Eley died Oct. 23, 1997 in NC. Was a Pontiac worker. May have been his actual address (not a dealer).

I bet you are right about the MST
The Toth car had it also = 4% John also said it was a residential address. I was leaving that option open in case it used to be business district that got torn down and turned into housing in modern times. There were some later comments on the Toth car , that he was a former PMD guy or dealership owner back then. Harper thought it was his residential address [Toth] , but seems like another verdict was thrown into the mix... been many years ago. This is Invoice Three on the ''Toth Car'' |

"Comptroller" is a GM corruption of the more correct "Controller" role, which is a front office staff financial position. Mr Eley was probably considered an executive and received the perks associated with that. K

Appreciate you guys getting involved.
I can remember Keith telling us how he always had to go through a dealer to get his vehicles as a GM employee , and pay Destination Charges. Just to go a few miles or less. Guessing some of these higher-ups knew of a loophole [or enough pull power] to bypass dealers doing the prep, hoopla drills, paperwork and avoiding the Destination Charge. In 1970 - Destination Charge to the PMD Retail Store was $10.75 About $100 in today's money. If Eley was a financial guy, he probably knew how to pinch every penny. Proposing since the Toth Car was used for a while by PMD, that PMD accordingly absorbed the Service/Prep fees. With Eley getting hit for $30.00 Service/Prep - lends me to think he took delivery of a brand new car. But leaving room on the table that this car still may have been only used for Display - not Driven. It's loaded like a freight train ! Build date could help us a little compared against the invoice date. Buildsheet would probably seal the deal pretty tight one way or the other. So would a previous invoice, if one existed , and was still on file. These things fascinate me almost as much as the cars do, sometimes. |

Another tidbit -
In the lower left corner of info lines - above Eley's name - is a code 21 The only other examples I have with 21 were all originated as PMD Company/Zone use cars. Others will have 19, 30, 35, 40, SP for Special Bid , etc.... or nothing at all. I don't have the definitions for those numerical codes, but they do mean something. 21 is getting a good reputation though. |

Yes, Dimitri Toth worked for Pontiac. I had the pleasure of meeting him and listening to him talk briefly while at Norwalk a couple years ago. He was in the DCI booth when Don first brought up his RAV heads. I could have listened to him talk all day !

The latest issue of Smoke Signals has a feature article on 1973-1975 Grand Ams, written by Tim Dye. There's a story on one car from each year, and the 73 model is a loaded 4-door originally ordered by Louis Goad. Mr. Goad had retired from a position of Vice President at GM when he ordered the car. And Tim notes in the story that the car's invoice listed his name and street address where a dealer name would normally go, and that "while this is not unheard of, it's very rare".
My guess is that this Mr. Eley's car was ordered through that same process. As the "comptroller" for Pontiac, he could well have been the ranking Finance guy for the division. And based on the obit, he would have been 60 years old in 1970 when this car was ordered... so he was perhaps already retired. I Zillow'd the address listed on the PHS, and it's a house in Bloomfield Hills that was built in 1963. An area popular for GM execs to live. Neat stuff.

Additional Info On Enoch Eley
I love history and really believe you have a significantly cool car there. I’ve been following all of your posts on the history of this 1970 GTO, and have additional information about Mr. Enoch Eley.
A ‘Comptroller’ is nothing to sneeze at fer sure...’ In business management, the comptroller is close to a Chief Executive, holding a ‘senior role’ in internal audit functions.’ According to the Detroit Free Press newspaper... He was definitely a real ‘heavy hitter’; for not only PONTIAC, but also GM’s Diesel Equipment Division in Grand Rapids, MI. (Dated April 10, 1960). March 6, 1963 https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/98669869/ QUOTE: “Division of General Motors Corp. Kenneth F. Hardy was named assistant comptroller, succeeding Enoch Eley, who has been appointed comptroller of GM's Diesel Equipment Division at Grand Rapids. Hardy, who Joined GM in 1935, has been director of the savings and suplemental benefits section of the GM financial staff since January, 1957” He was appointed ‘Comptroller’ for PONTIAC Motor Division on or about October 10, 1966, succeeding a Mr. Cotton. (Dated October 10, 1966) Also, see page 24 of this newspaper; The Clarkston News where Enoch announces the retirement of Kenneth Thayer (Dated Thursday June 11, 1970)... http://oaklandcountyhistory.org/awwe...d=1&did=156246 Mr, Eley likely not only had insights into loopholes of how to acquire a car within GM, but likely well knew or possibly played gold with Chief Executives, no question about it. One doesn’t get to be comptroller of any GM Division without knowing their stuff, but also networking. If you wanna read for yourself, click these links and then click on the OCR down arrow and then search the page for Enoch. https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/98550562/ https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/98550562/ BTW... Here’s a cool ad from that newspaper ! https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...ictureid=13576 Best Regards, Dave - GTO3DEUCES Last edited by GTO3DEUCES; 10-22-2019 at 12:34 AM. |

If i were a descendant of Enoch Eley , [and a car guy] i would definitely want to know about the existence of this car. And that it was for sale. Pretty cool for a 6O year old Brass Hat Exec to buy a loaded up 455 GTO versus a Bonne or GP , with his own money. He must have been kind of like us. |
