Trouble with 2nd Generation Ignition Switch Choices.
Bought new switch from NAPA for 72. Switch sticks in start position. Tried another at NAPA same thing. Tried to cycle it 20 times ,to work any 'rough' spots smooth. No luck. Any other choices out there that has worked for you? Now thinking maybe look for NOS.

I have never had any luck with ANY electrical or electrical related part from NAPA. Maybe try a different parts supplier. My new ignition switch came from American Autowire for my 67 GTO. Smooth as silk and trouble free for the last 4 years.

AC Delco still lists one for tilt and one for the standard column. I used to have good luck with AC Delco electrical parts, but as with everything who knows how the quality is at this point? ...............
Part #s D1404B no tilt D1405B with tilt Wish you luck............ |

I wonder if he actually means the ignition lock cylinder and not the actual "switch" that's on the column under the dash.

Is the return spring too weak or linkage binding up when you bolt the switch down?

Make sure it's for a tilt column?
They are opposite of the non-tilt switch. (Start on opposite end of the non-tilt) Maybe you are 'sticking' in the 'Accessory' position? See if it works moving it on the opposite end? Compare the switch to the one you took out. The connector posts will be opposite if wrong.

I had tilt column on bench. Beside regular column on bench. Yes I played with linkage rod. Lubed it.The old working switch worked fine. There seemed to be a 'catch' in new switch, not allowing it to come from start to run. I thought ,in use it would loosen nope. Went to NAPA looked at 2nd new switch.worked it there same problem. I had 2 more oem original tilt column switches they come off start to run, easily but will not function electrically. When I test I try to look at everything, keeping it simple.

On a similar note, last 3 (3 different cars) key switches i bought were notchey . Filed on the keys to free them up.
And one of my trucks floor dimmer switch ,GM, has benn replaced 3 times in 5 years! Quality of parts is getting ridiculous!

I just recently had to replace the original switch in our 69 Camaro. Went to Napa and bought one of their Echlin brands. While it does work okay, it is excessively stiff to move, especially for the crank position. I've noticed after daily driving the car for the last 2 months it's gotten slightly better, or maybe I've just gotten used to it. Wife drives it and she hasn't said a word about it so I'm good, lol.
I figured I'd let it ride for a while since it works fine, because at some point I'll be switching over to a tilt column anyway so I don't want to go chasing non tilt ignition switches. At that point I may try a different brand. Most likely from American Auto Wire since I've liked their products on other restorations, and I need a couple other things from them anyway. |

If the switch doesn't stick operated alone out of car, the problem is in the install or the column itself.
Also check if column position/tilt makes any difference. |

It's the switch. Used rod to move switch outside of column. I learned take everything out of car. It wasnt a simple replace.
