Default removing engine only how do I tie off transmission

I am pulling the engine in my 65 tempest in a small garage. I will have to roll the car in and out.
Any Ideas on how to support the transmission while moving car in and out?

Thanks

Greg

With a automatic I have used my long 1/2" breaker bar to support the input shaft while spaning the frame with it one the engine was far enough out of the way.

I use .041 safety wire to support the transmission.

Couple of long 3/8 bolts through the bell housing resting on top of a piece of square tubing spanning the frame.

I've used variations of all the above, though will say, you also want to support the converter so it's not loaded on the pump and/or seal. Safety wire from a converter mount pad to a bell bolt hole is fine.

Removal of the converter would be best. I pull engines so infrequently that I always replace the front seal just because.

Replacing the seal is a good idea since it's apart, yes. Leaving the converter in there keeps the seal from drying out, and from crap getting into the trans.

I used a 2" diameter wood curtain rod across the fenders (on top of a couple of Kitchen "Hot Pads") on each side for many years.

I bought a really nice floor Transmission Jack a few years ago, and remove the Lakewood Scatter Shield and Nash Trans with that these days. THEN I PULL THE ENGINE. Someday I will have my Bendpak lift.

I use guide pins to align the trans with the bellhousing after the bell housing is installed with the same jack. So much easier to move the body around with nothing hanging underneath.

Support the trans with a floor jack while you pull the engine. Once the engine is out, jack the trans up until you can slip a 2x2 across the frame rails under the bell.. I left my convertor on the trans. On reinstall, I put a jack under the trans, removed the 2x2 and dropped the engine back in. Much easier to slide the engine back against the trans and use the floor jack to elevate the front of the trans to match the motor. The first time I did it that way I pulled the motor forward after mating it to the trans to check because it went in too easy! I never understood the logic behind pulling the engine and trans to work on the engine and turn a one man job into a three man horror show only to find out you need the car on ramps.jackstands because you can't get the trans tail housing low enough to get it under the car.

I use two small straps with hooks on the ends. I put the hooks thru the bell housing bolt holes, and the other hooks grab the top of the firewall.

i would try to pull the trans out with the motor attached if you are going to move the car around. if you cant do it together i would drop the trans and remove it. it will make the car a little more lighter to move. dont want that thing to fall down and have trans fluid all over your driveway...just a thought

Two by Four or a piece of pipe across the the front frame rails with a few big Phillip’s screw drivers in the bolt holes in the trans housing

I usually loop mechanics wire through the top 2 mounting holes, tie it to the wiper motor, done. You're only suspending 100# or less. There's no need for rigging strong enough to lift the car up.

We hold the trans up from the under side, use a smaller ratchet strap with hook style ends, from side to side, usually hooking on the frame, strap goes under the front of the bell housing. Tighten the ratchet strap up until it hold the trans up. Then adjust the ratchet strap to lower or raise the trans in the front when going together.
