1971 Trans Am
I've been looking for a round port car for a couple of years now, and I finally got one. Some of you may recognize the car as the low-mileage car that board member Keith K bought out of Canada last year. Keith had sent me pictures right after he bought it, and although I was happy for him, I was also a little jealous, so I asked Keith to please think of me if he ever considered selling it. A few months ago Keith contacted me and said he was going to thin out the heard a bit and offered me the car. I'm very grateful to Keith for giving me a shot at the car before offering it for sale publicly. I promise to take good care of it.
Below is what Keith wrote when he posted about the car last October, and I'll just cut and paste it since I can't improve on his description. I invite both Keith and Steve T. (455hota) to chime in regarding how they acquired the car and any additional history they may have to offer. "First of all thanks to forum member 455hota for connecting me up with the car and its second owner, and for assistance in retrieving it from its Ontario, Canada hometown of 45 years It's a 4-speed car with three factory options: Console, AM Radio, and Rear Speaker. It has 16,700 original miles, original paint, stripes, interior, etc. The low miles are attributable to its having been essentially a dedicated drag car in its early years, followed by a life of indoor storage, with occasional outings to shows by the first and second owners who appreciated what it was. As a result of the early racing activity, the original block is gone. Pretty much everything else is original, save a few odds/ends like chrome valve covers, the vintage oil pressure gauge installed in the dash, and the exhaust downstream of the manifolds (original system a victim of the race car thing). Interestingly, the GM Canada docs state the car was first delivered to "GM of Canada Show Car Account Oshawa, Ont". The dealer that ultimately received it, Fenton's Pontiac in Port Elgin, Ontario (their sticker is still on the taillight panel), told the first owner it was used by GM of Canada for filming ads. It's an amazing machine to drive... feels just like new, AM radio still works, doors close beautifully, seats are comfortable in a way the repros never quite get right, etc." Last edited by eaglesan13; 03-31-2016 at 06:52 PM. |

I will be at the Sacramento Swap Meet in a few weeks, but I'll be taking the Formula 400 so I can put it in the car corral with a for sale sign on it. You're welcome to come by the house afterward if you want to check out the t/a. Maybe you can bring the creampuff so I can get a look at it.

Oh, and do you think your inner door latch releases are original? The black and chrome? Those look like the ones that were on my 1971 black interior with custom trim/deluxe interior - whatever determines that. I can't imagine anyone would have changed that out on your car there. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks .

Chad,
I'm not sure whether or not the ones on my car are "correct", but based on how the interior looks, I would bet they are original to the car. Quote:

Agree with Chris. From what I have seen, the chrome door handles are correct on standard interior for 71, and the parts manual agrees with that. I have seen the 70 style colored plastic ones on original 71 cars but tend to believe the factory was using them up. I have seen far more standard with chrome handled 71s than I have colored handle 71s, like 5 to 1.

The GM of Canada paperwork shows it came with 3.42's. It also shows the car came with Rally II's, so I'll be looking for a set of those. From what I have read on the boards it could have come with JW's, KN's or KR's. The car was built in Norwood in mid-February.
