I am planning on ordering all of my brake & fuel lines this week. My 68 had drum brakes, But I now plan to use 69 front disk brakes. What lines should I buy? I know I have seen a proportioning valve below the master on 68 models, & I don't have that part as of now. Do I need that? Can I use a different frame mounted version, if its available? I plan to buy stainless lines, but that’s about all that I am sure of right now. For what they cost, I don't want to get the wrong ones.

Also, I don't have a master cylinder yet, I was thinking I need a 69+ model, But maybe not? I am a little confused at the moment. Well, at least a little more than usual

thanks for any help, 68 ragtop

Get the 69 disc/drum master cylinder, lines from the master to the 69-72 (frame mounted) proportioning valve, and the 69-72 proportioning valve itself.
You can then pitch the old large prop valve that is mounted next to the old master, and the squared-off distribution block that is mounted on the frame now.
Start soaking the living bejeezus out of all the fittings on the old distribution block with Rust Buster a few days before you plan on taking the system apart.
Basically, you now have an all 69 brake system.
Check my personal website if you really want to have fun with those brakes.

So, looking at all the parts books, It looks like the 68-70 disk brake kits are a 5 piece kit, I am thinking the 5th line would be the one for the proportioning valve below the master. where the 70+ disk kits are a 4 piece kit. Should I order a 68 drum line kit, & just use the new proportioning valve?

Now, after more research, it looks like all 68-70 disk brake cars had the booster mounted proportioning valve. So, should I order the 71 disk brake line kit? Are the frames close enough from 68 to 71 where I can do that? Or should I just locate a original booster mounted valve.

Thanks for any more info,

We converted my wife's '69 and Jack's '68 to disc and used a frame mount prop valve. Use the later parts. The prop valve near the master is trash.

The kit will have 4 lines. The 5 line kits are for systems with the inline prop valve near the master.

The frame mounted prop valve will have 5 ports:
Front Master In
Rear Master In
Left Wheel Out
Right Wheel Out
Rear Brakes Out

You will mount the new master, run the 2 lines to the prop vlave down on the frame, hook the rear line to the back of the prop valve, and the 2 lines going to the front brakes.

From my Paddock catalog:
Prop valve - PVB7187 : 71-74 : $110
Lines - AKT07103 : 71-72 : 4pc : $66 OEM, $96 Stainless

Thanks for the advice. With that being said, should I order the 68 drum kit with the four pieces, or the 71 kit for disk brakes. I am guessing the only difference would be the size of the fittings? Will they be pre-bent the same?
What confuses me, is there is a different part number for almost every year. Can I try to locate a 71 frame prop valve, & use that?

Thanks again

You are converting to front discs, so you need the disc brake setup.
If a new prop valve is available, you'd be better off getting it. Used prop valves tend to be gummed up, and cleaning them is a pain. Give yourself piece of mind and get a new one.
