Did the car leave the factory with a solid rear axle(and not the power shift)?

No, the car left the factory with the transaxle.

Stan swapped in the big car rear axle after the car had been in use.

Thumbs up

When it comes to restoring Factory Drag cars, a few things should be taken into account, Who it belonged to, Race History, records it may have set, condition of car as found. rarity aside, Stan claims this car made the fastest pass or passes of all the 63 SD Lemans/Tempest in 63, that and the fact that the car still has the factory approved drivetrain mods he made to the car back then, and looks like it didn't see much action after it left his ownership, makes it easy to decide how to restore the car, AS RACED, sometimes a factory stock restoration wipes away more of the original car than if you left it alone. another example is Arnie's 63 Tameless Tiger car, it also started life as a SD Lemans coupe, first with M/T, then as the "Mr B's Runabout", then modded into the Tiger, Question is, when it was pulled from the ditch and "redone" should it have been restored to stock? as the wheelstanding, blown Tameless Tiger, Arnie won numerous match races, got tons of ink in the car mags, kept a Pontiac competitive with the factory supported A/FX funny cars in 65/66 . the car had a personality all it own!, all the factory Super Stock, A/FX cars, built back then were low production cars, (some more than others) but it was the drivers and the car's personality/name recognition that made them famous to generations of gearheads! I'm glad to see John is planning to restore the car as raced, and that it may be making some passes down the track as well!

In the October 1963 Issue of Speed and Custom magazine starting on page 36 there is a 5 page article that shows a '63 Tempest wagon which I believe shows the exact same driveline as the white Lemans was delivered with.

Interesting they are going with the as-raced setup. Is this car going to auction? Interested to see if it brings the number like this.

Tom has mentioned the owner bought it because he has always wanted one, and intends to keep it (not flip it).
