Can you get one of the combos with a master cylinder and clutch on the frame?
As far as the fenderwell headers the closest made are the sbc fat fendered ones at speedway and get some j bends and an old set of headers or get some new flanges. If you remember seeing the 64 Tempest gasser on the Hamb, he also posts here as a member. Here was Dils thread on here for the header pics http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...=gasser&page=7

Rocky- you said that the '58-60 bellhousing will work with any '55-58 chassis. While that's true to some extent, there's a difference in the positions of the mount holes between pre-'58 and '58-60 housings. I've had '57 and '58 housings sitting next to each other, and the mount holes were different distances away from the center of the housing. I think that the '58 holes were further from center, but don't trust my memory on that. I also don't know 100% that '55-56 are identical to '57, but I think they are. Perhaps the difference could be resolved by merely selecting rubber mounts from a particular year- don't know.

I'm going to get the old engine out, the new one roughly in place and see what is what as far as M/C goes.
My buddy said he has a friend that is an exhaust wiz. Hopefully I'll see him soon and maybe I can get him to make me up a set of headers. |

Following your thread with interest. I like what you're doing and good to see you thinking things out. The Chieftain Catalinas are a fav of mine, next best model after the Safari!
Have you figured out what you're going to do about motor mounts? Since you can't use the 58-60 bell housing, you won't have bell housing mounts. Jack, your memory is correct, the 58-60 bell housing mounts are spaced further apart than the 1955-57 standard transmission bell housing mounts. The solution is to use 56-57 Strato-Flight transmission cross member which has mounts a little further apart than the 58-60 bell housing, then make a couple of adapter plates to make up the difference. Of course that doesn't help pknopp since he can't use the 58-60 bell housing on his 64 block. See www.pontiacsafari.com/punkrockcop/index.htm for a 57 build that may provide some ideas. It is a 59 engine and shows how the motor mounts were done with the 58-60 standard trans bell housing. It also shows how he did headers and master cylinder. Frame is same for 56 & 57. |

I really want to try and make brackets for the rear mounts. I don't know how I missed that link. I've searched and searched and searched the internet for Pontiac conversions and thought I had found all 2-3 of them out there!!!
I wasn't planning on going with power brakes so mine should be a little simpler. I did appreciate the link to the headers. I should have a little more room not having the upper suspension in the way. |

I thought I had better photos of the rear bell housing mounts on that page but I didn't. I'll add some when I get a little time, there has been interest in it in the past. Here are more detailed photos of the mounts. You can clearly see the metal plates made to adapt the motor mounts to the bell housing. Either the 55-57 or 58 mounts can be used, the only difference is the placement of the holes on the upper part of mount. |

That is my '57 wagon on Larry's site. Larry is correct in that it is a '58 bellhousing with adaptor plates which were fabricated. The rear crossmember was also fabbed and there is a rubber mount between the crossmember and the trans. The rear crossmember was probably not necessary since the original hydro trans did not have a rear mount. However, that seemed like a lot of weight being supported only by those mounts on the bellhousing. The crossmember was a simple addition and adds some support.

The old HydraMatics were much heavier than that transmission, and the bellhousing mounts worked fine.

Yep. Like I said, it was probably completely unnecessary but since the Tremec had a provision for a tail mount it was decided to use one in addition to the bellhousing mounts. It was not a major job to make the crossmember.

You may want to reinstall without the springs, level out the lower control arms and plumb bob from the end of the spindle and make some marks on the floor to get yourself a reference for the axle install.

I have a couple buddies that are helping out. They are good with all the fancy measuring stuff. LOL I would never get this done without them and will give them a ton of credit when all is said and done. As I noted, it's my buddies garage, while I have a garage it's not big enough to do a job like this. In the end it will be a benefit for both of us. |

Should be out tomorrow. Mostly noting that I need an iron front cover for the 389. I hope to be able to get it back together next week. (anyone need a suspension)?
Wait.....I had a real question. My buddy has a 69 GTO rear end in a Nomad. He used to 1/8 mile it and is planning to make it into a more subdued street car again. He said he had 4.13 Richmond gears in it. Would trade me for mine or perhaps an S-10 rear end. This should be a good fit? |

That rear may be a little wide but will be very close. May want to double check the width first, but the stock rear is around 60.5". One nice thing on mine with the 8.8 it's an inch narrower and at the time before cutting the 1/4's getting the wheels on and off was easier.
Did you find a 60 cover ?

I haven't found a cover yet. There is one on eBay right now but I think I'll hold out for a little nicer one.
