'76 Trans Am
We're working on a '76 Trans Am restoration. It's a 4 speed car in which we're putting a '73 455 engine. A few questions came up when ordering parts from Ames.
First, the Borg Warner Super T10 we have has 26 splines on the input shaft, 32 splines on the output shaft. Ames catalog only goes up to '74, when Muncie was the only manual trans. Therefore, the clutch kits do not have the correct spline count. Do we just order an aftermarket 26 spline 11" clutch disc? Second, there is no info on the air cleaner for the shaker hood. We need nearly all the pieces to assemble the air cleaner, scoop, PCV plumbing, etc. for the stock Quadrajet. Any ideas? Third, is the stock '73 455 crank be machined to accept the pilot bearing for the Super T-10? The engine was in a TH400 Grandville. Last, the replacement blower motor for the heater is much larger than the original one in the chassis. It looks like it will mount OK, but what do we do with the hole in the motor case for motor cooling.

I can help on the 1st and 3rd questions. I pulled the Ames website up and their part number FR695T clutch should work if your flywheel will accept an 11 inch clutch. Your stock crank should be machined for a pilot bearing. It should be part number FR696AF in Ames. If you go to a parts store such as O'reilly's for the bearing, it will be part number 7109.

Original flywheels in '76 did not have 2 sets of holes, for both diameter clutches. Chances are 90% Plus that it has a 10.5 inch clutch Flywheel. Be SURE the flywheel and balancer are for a 455. >> this is KEY from John Milner >"if your flywheel will accept an 11 inch clutch"

There is a good write up on trans am country about shakers and air cleaners. It may be in the mechanical section. There are many varieties of both and that thread shows all of the different combos. Sorry I dont know how to cross link between sites.

Somewhere around 76 or 77 that hole in the blower motor changed sizes. Both are readily available. Any parts store should have info to help you...

The blower motor from Ames came with plastic plugs for the motor holes. Can I use them without motor overheat problems?

What is the best source for radiator & brackets. I noticed Ames has a complete radiator kit which includes fan, fan clutch, shroud, etc. We need every piece, including core support.
Engine is medium mild 461.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=254475190190 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=274266531062 There were 3 air cleaner assemblies for the 4 bbl Firebirds in '76. A 350-4 bbl, a 400-4 bbl and the 400/455 Trans Am. The basic stamping of the base is probably the same between all three and will orient in correct position using a '75-up carburetor. The TA will probably have the square hole for the air breather in a different position than the other two. There should be a D hole stamped in the side for a valve going from a port on the vacuum tee thru the valve to a break valve on the carburetor ('75 has a similar hole but the D is turned). The bracket holding in the Auto-ThermAC diaphragm has straight edges on pre-'77 years. There is a flat stamping on the floor of the base for a sensor. Some have a hole for it, some don't (I'm thinking this is the difference between the 350 and the others). The TA air cleaner lid has a wide lipped lid for the '76-up Pontiac 400/455 TA's for use with the A542C air cleaner filter. It is available in repop, but I wouldn't know about proper fitment. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FN112S Ames air filter (make sure it's correct though). https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...part_num=FN150 The air ducting from the air cleaner snorkel is available in repop too. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...part_num=FN114 https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FN113W https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...rt_num=FN114AB https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FN252J https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...rt_num=FN114AC Pre-heater elbow has casting 498539 and can be found on eBay with clamp easily enough. Ames does sell a similar clamp. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FN406T Pre-heater ducting hose can be purchased from Ames. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...rt_num=FN406RB Don't see a pre-heater shroud listed. There is a shaker hose fitting on Ames but not in correct plastic. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FD157Q Shaker drain hose on Ames. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FD157R Ames air breather. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FN735C Ames clip. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FN735F See picture below for vent pipe differences. The Parts Place markets one on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=351701920446 No picture from Ames. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...art_num=FN735R Hope it's as clear as mud, LOL.

Well, I don’t know for sure, all the hose motors back then had the short rubber elbow going from that hole, to the case of the motor, to cool the motor. Never heard of eliminating the cooling tube...

My stock 76 400 flywheel takes an 11" clutch.
The late 1976 flywheel register( hole) is smaller than earlier cranks, so that will have to be opened if you have a late 76 flywheel. HTH |
