Default Original 1965 floor mats

There are some other threads stating that reproduction floor mats may be discontinued. I thought I would bring up my knowledge of the original style 65 floor mats, something that I have not heard anyone discuss before. I believe there are two factory style floor mats for the 1965 model. Early/original and/or later produced 65 or produced after the 65 model year ended.

The background to the story: I ordered my 65 new and took delivery of it in January 1965, the floor mats that I bought were dealer installed at the time of delivery. I still have these floor mats in my car today. In late 1966 I decided to purchase through the dealer another set of floor mats for my 65 that I still have today in the box never used. Looking at the two floor mats there are some differences. even though both have the same part number on the back of the mats. The reproduction floor mats produced today resemble the later style.

The early/original style near the word PONTIAC has 27 vertical lines. The later style has 28 vertical lines with the far right line not being full length as the other lines are. The early style has all vertical lines being full length around the word PONTIAC.

So I’m not sure if the change occurred halfway through the 65 production or it was a different mold made after the 65 production run ended. But there are 2 styles of original 65 floor mats.

There’s only “one” gentlemen that would know this type of detail.

ROGER ..... That.

There was also a Full Front Floor-full mat but it was only for cars WITHOUT a floor shifter or a console, it was for column-shift cars. It was a one piece mat that went from drivers floor over transmission hump to the passenger side.

65 421 Todd, yes that looks like the early original style. I'm guessing it is not a reproduction, I can see an indentation in the mat via the clutch pedal, mine has that too.

In the attached picture are my mats in blue. On the right is the early 65 original style. The left is the later 65 style. The easiest way to determined the difference is the early style has a complete vertical line on the far right of the mat while the later has a partial vertical line. Also one vertical line difference between the two mats.

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Without a doubt, this low mileage Black 65 is completely unaltered right down to the Factory mounted Redlines.

Option 382, take a look at the passenger side mats. Compare your original mat to your later, you may find the same design differences on the trans hump inner side where one mat has the short vertical line and other mat has a long vertical line.

Thanks BVZ for the compliment!

421 Todd you are correct with your theory: Pictures of the front passenger mats (early original version on the right, later version on the left).

Here's a pic of the red ones that I just bought. Obviously the latter issue.

Here's the one that I really wanted, because we have a column shift car. But way too expensive to justify. That being said, I've been watching this item for over two years. It may still be available if I ever can justify it.

As far as the original and later manufacturing, here's a pair that seem to be quite original indeed:

On the Green mats
GTO's didn't get a green interior until 69
He should probably revise the listing and go after the 69 & 70 owners.

That full length Red mat for column shift is cool.
sort of in the category of a gift idea "for the man who already has everything"

Maybe your wife can pass the hat around this coming Christmas and everyone chip in on it. Hope you have a lot of wealthy relatives

Check again ^^^^^^.

These Green front floor mats have to be 64-65.

There is a factory cut-out for the floor mounted Fast pedal.

1966 and newer have the suspended Fast pedal.

According to Eric White's GTO book under dealer-installed accessories for 1965 Green floor mats were available.

Default GREEN 65 Floor Mats

I suppose they would look ok in the #214 Dark Turquoise interior.
