Default 6X heads - Front Freeze plug size and replacement help.

Gentlemen:
I found a freeze plug that is leaking pretty badly. Glad it is in the front and not the rear. Can you help me with:

1: Removal and install tips
2: Size
3: Part numbers.

I only ask because this is not discussed "ad neusum" like other things on the forum.

Thanks
Dave

I Would think that any of the forum vendors will have the plugs.
As for removing them I take a punch and tap one side so that it rotates in the hole. Then pull it out with a pair of slip joint plyers. To install a new one I use a socket that will fit inside the plug, apply a coating of Permatex gasket sealer then tap it in.
If the plugs you can see are this bad can you imagine what condition the rear ones are in? Get an inspection mirror and look at the rear plugs too. To replace the rear plugs the heads will ahve to be removed.

What Ollie says for removal. Be careful not to scare the metal on the head when removing plug.

The size is 1-3/8". or part #1385.. As Ollie says, use Permatex gasket sealer when installing.

Now, if you have any groves or gouges where the plug sits, use some j.b weld and fill in the groves. Wait a day till it cures then sand it smooth. Install plug using a socket that fits the inner portion of the plug. Make sure to use sealer on the plug.

Just be careful that the tool you use to install the plug doesn't get stuck in the inner portion of plug when installing. In other words, if the tool is to big it will jam inside the plug when your hamming it in...

Hope this makes sense..

Thanks guys. I bought a box of 10 from Rock Auto Dorman part #565-025 1 3/8 BRASS freeze plug. 15.60$ Came in one day. I have the JB on and it is curing. Gouges didn't look that big until I filled them.

Make sure you allow the JB weld to cure and sand it nice and round. Also use the Gasket sealer. The heat on the heads will help seal everything up when you start the engine..

Dave: Use the Aviation Gasket sealer # 30516. This is made by Loctite. Drive the plug in and start her up.. Good to go..

Never mind the poll...lol

OK... This freeze plug is kicking my ass.
Freeze plug-2 dave-0

I got the new one in got all of my stuff in place new coolant etc.. took her for a run and in traffic she got to 200* WTF!!!!!!!!!

I got home and I didnt see coolant pouring out, but I did see a bubble at the base of the plug, kinda like a snot bubble.

Could this plug not be allowing pressure to build thus causing this???

One caveat is that since I put in a skinnier plug in the head vs, the thick one, the coolant in the rad seems to be moving A LOT faster. food for thought.

SHould I leave the plug in and see if it seal up with a heat-up and cool down or remove it BLOB JB weld in the sand it down again and try again. Initially I sanded the gouges, filled the gouges and did some light sanding with 320 grit sandpaper. SHould I put a mess of weld and sand it down???

Dave

Hi Dave: Just leave the plug and it should seal up with the heat from the engine. If not try again..

It should be ok.. Did you use some gasket sealer on the block/plug?

What thermostat are you running, degrees? How was it before? Was the rad low after you first run.. Something you might want to consider is removing the plug on the water crossover when filling the rad so as to remove all the air from the heads.. Hope this make sense..

Rad was full. I found a vacuum leak at the transmission modulator. I jacked up the car and some more air came out. I keep adding water. It was almost 100* out today, but she NEVER got that hot. I know that I am pulling AIR through the rad, cause when I give her throttle from the carb directly, she is trying to pull the radiator closer. HMMMMMM more to come.
