steering wheel
Has anyone removed the 2 chrome trim pieces on a 65 deluxe steering wheel? The piece slips over a notch in the wheel but the problem is that the trim piece needs to be spread open beyond the thickness of the wheel and I am afraid of cracking the trim piece. Also, does the trim piece get black paint in between the ridges?

Many years ago mine had to be rechromed too. I don't remember exactly how I did it, I looked at it closely and just took my time and was gentle so as not to damage them. I sent them out to be rechromed. When they came back they slid/pressed back on nicely. The wheel looks so much better doing them. No paint between the ridges.

Do you recall if the trim is some what flexible like spring steel?

Its been many many years. From what I can remember mine were cast metal pieces.

i have done a few, i just gently pried them off. i think that the metal might stretch a bit on removal. i added strips of masking tape in the tracks so there was not a lot of additional paint buildup, ie.. primers & base and top coat,
seems like when i reinstalled them, if they seemed loose, i took a vice grip with padding and adjusted it so that there was enough tension to kind of tighten up the clip, the wheel prevents it from breaking. |
