Default Steering column question

After removing my column to be restored and reinstalling it I noticed when I'm driving that the turn signal indicator isn't quite horizontal as it was. As a result turning one direction self cancels quicker than the other.

It seemed like this will only bolt in one way, so I didnt bother to check anything until I had everything back in place, and installed the turn signal lever. Before I tear back into this, can anyone tell me if I can make a slight rotation with the upper assembly to correct this or do I need to pull/loosen everything at the firewall to slightly turn the column?

So is the turn indicator lever pointing down to 8 or 7 o’clock? ( with the hazard knob pointing upward). You may have not gotten the turn indicator cover/housing and lock plate seated all the way in (after you line it up, press firmly while you rotate clockwise to seat).

I think you could remedy without removing the column, but just pulling the cover unit back out and reinstalling.

Assuming that the 67 and 68 GTO columns have a similar set up in the upper column, others please correct if I’m wrong here

Thanks guys...it's off ever so slightly, turn signal slightly towards the 8 o'clock position with the hazard button slightly up.

I did pull the steering wheel off once to see if I could just loosen and rotate that outer collar where those parts attach to but it didn't look like it would move. Based on those pictures posted I guess I need to go deeper?

If the three screws are tight, loosen them about 2 1/2 - 3 turns, push down on the bowl and rotate clockwise

I will give that a try and report back.

Thanks Ed

I loosened them, I could push the bowl down but when I tried to rotate it I could feel a stop. I could rotate it counterclockwise and it would go about a 1/4" and hit another stop. I didn't want to take the screws out completely since it looks like they pass through springs.. and that would probably be a mess.

You could try loosening the screws a little more, say another 1-1.5 turns, and then play with it a little till you can get it to turn clockwise all the way. It can take a little “finessing” and the tighter the screws the harder it is to line up.

If one of the screws come out, you may be able to get it threaded in the lock plate again, or worst case you pull the whole turn signal unit out and start over again.

Well it wouldn't be the end of the world mess but I think it's a lesson that every 67-68 owner learns the first time they try to replace the signal switch. If you do happen to pop a spring, the bowl may need to come off and the job will actually be easier. Just remember to remove the bowl retainer from the shaft before attempting to remove the bowl.
When reassembling the lock plate turn the screws in until they're flush with the lock plate. See photo above

Maybe I'll live with it haha. The bowl isn't moving anymore to the direction I need it to go. If I recall there are two aluminum "wedges" that go between the dash and column mount, correct? I looked under the dash and I can only see one. But I may have to look closer. With better light. And maybe with glasses.

Only one wedge. Installation instructions in the service manual starting on page 9-7

Wedge is on the bottom right and adjusted / tightened only after the upper two nuts are torqued

You do have all four screws holding the bracket to the column, right?

I'll look in the service manual, maybe it's not set in there correctly
