In my 69 GTO, I lowered my ET by .25 second when I installed the stock air cleaner with no filter versus running no air cleaner at all.

As with anything in the car world, your mileage will vary.....seems some have issues and some not.....I assume that many factors contribute to whether it’s s problem or not

I too poo pooed the 1-2 shift issues, even after burning up two sprags

After 3 sprags, I now run a manual valve body with a line lock and ONLY do 3rd gear burnouts....found that my 60’s are MUCH more consistent, I’m able to reach good wheel speed for proper heat in a short time and I’ve not roasted a sprag in a couple years....wish I would have paid attention to this issue long before tearing trans apart again and again

Interesting. I hope my luck continues! I gotta make it back to the track first!

I do low gear only burnouts with my TH400 at 3500rpms for about 8-9 seconds then I let off the line-lock and allow the carb to move out of the water. No reason to upshift to 2nd and for sure it's hard on the sprag when you dry the tires off and come out of the water under load. Modern tread compounds don't need a lot of heat to get them sticky enough for good traction. Some need very little burnout at all. I've found that the MT ET Street Radials need the most, and although they work well they don't last long on a car like mine. I'm on my 3rd set and back when I was racing the car a lot more would only get about 40-60 runs on a pair until the tread was pretty much gone. Then I'd get 20 or so really good runs till the cords would start to show.

On a good track 60' times were typically in the 1.61-1.64 range around 2500-3500' DA. In really good air been 1.59 on a few outings but these tires do NOT like cold tracks especially when the air is good and you are making more power.........Cliff

Default Update

Short version:
11.73@114mph 1.61/60'
Long version:
Made some changes, starting with the fuel system since my pressure was dropping to 3 psi when I would take it out on the highway and stomp on it. I was trying to stay mechanical so I got a Robbmc 1100 and ran it with a deadhead regulator. ET stayed at 12.1 and pressure was still dropping to 4psi. Car ran great on the street but this pump died on a road trip so I had a shop put a Holley Black electric on. Car ran good with this pump but still couldn't get past 12.1 plus it is loud as hell for a street car.
Next change was trans and converter built by Hosgto on here and he supplied an ATI converter that stalled 32-3400. Best 60 was in the 1.80s
Next was going to the Tanks Inc setup 340lph pump with 8AN supply and return. I had an expensive Holley regulator that just couldn't keep up. I replaced that with a Weldon unit and that finally solved my fuel issues. This got me to 11.9
Next was a converter swap to one that Gaydosh had laying around that he thought was a TCI 38-4000 stall. The ATI was getting worse and my 60s were in the 1.90s. After the swap I was in the 1.60s and getting air under the front tire. ETs were still in the 11.90s
Next change was a set of Mickey Thompson 26x8.5 slicks (fit in the trunk real nice) with no real change in ET.
Final change was a new exhaust, 3" with X between manifolds and mufflers wit 2.5" tails. This got me to 11.70s this past weekend.

Very nice!! Way to stay persistent. Looks like the in tank fuel system and the exhaust system were the biggest improvements for the car. Amazing what chasing the little things will do.

Thanks guys! I should have also mentioned I've been running non ethanol 89 octane and last wknd was pretty much perfect weather, high 60s with low humidity. My best track day ever, first run was my personal record and then i beat that on the next run. Pretty sure i could have beat that but some dude oiled down the track plus a huge line of cars so i called it a day. At lot of those runs were in 85 degrees with high humidity.
Formula, I'd have to say the biggest game changer was the converter but exhaust and fuel systems were huge factors also. This Hostler built T400 is the best trans I've ever had in any car.

Nice work--Your car is a real sleeper. I believe I saw and talked to you at Burdettes last year. 11.7 is really moving. I think the RobbMC pump should have worked for you. I installed one last year and took my car to Capital Raceway and had some intitial fuel issues and I bumped it up on the fly and on my last run got the fuel pressure straight and pulled an 11.9. I have not been back since....I did however have a Nitrous puck system installed and had the car dynoed with that pump. It had to be maxed out but it worked fine... 150 shot. I believe mine also has a few tenths in it as is. I have not been back this year...Capital is now closed. I will take motivation from your progress....great job.

Thanks and your car looks familiar. Hopefully Burdette doesn't discontinue that show, this year was supposed to be the last show but the rona shut it down. I agree, the Robbmc should have got it there and there's a couple guys on here going faster than me with it.

It's hard to beat an in tank pump pushing the fuel from the very back of the car.

Mike on the forums here tried everything with the Robbmc pump, 1/2" line, big pickup in the tank, cranking up the fuel pressure etc... His car does run respectable in the mid 11's at 116-117 mph with a mild 455, but at the top of the track he only had 3 lbs. of fuel pressure and could never get away from that.
He now has an in tank system.

I like these mechanical pumps, they are certainly worlds better than any store bought carter pump, and I do like the idea of simplicity, and I'll use them on any mild build or daily driver, I'm just not sure I'd go that route if I were trying to squeak ET's out of a thirsty car or one that launches pretty hard.

You'll be in the 11's once you get the 60' sorted out. Best pass I ever made with my Discomobile on the pump gas 455 was a 12.78 @ 106 MPH @ 4100 lbs. with a "hookin' and bookin'" 1.81 60'.

Formula, I agree it's hard to beat the Tank's systems. One of many things on the car I wish I would have done from the beginning that would have saved me a lot of time and money.

Way to chase it!

How quiet is the Tanks inc. system?

Get some light weight wheels and tires for the front.... it helps.... especially on a full weight street car

Surprised you didn’t opt for some dumps when you went 3” And X.... it helps some

What track are you running at?

Depends on which pump you go with. The 400-450 LPH series are very quiet. With key on/engine off I can't hear my 400 LPH when sitting in the car, I have to look at the gauge to see if I have pressure. You can here it if standing behind the car key on/engine off.

The 255 pumps are louder. You can hear them sitting in the car with key on/engine off, but once the engine is running you can't hear it.

Here is one of mine with a 400 LPH pump. Very quiet
https://youtu.be/M-TsdxjE144

And here is one I did with a 255 pump. Noticeable noise difference.

Thanks....I figured but they had to make some noise! Just wondering how much.

I can’t hear my Holley black while cruising either... and the wife doesn’t comment

Still dreaming about one of those Tanks inc setups

How are you guys regulating the psi down for carb use with those efi pumps? They use 1/2" line?
