"X" over smoothing out idle sound?
Does the "X" in a Pypes or RARE exhaust system smooth out the idle sound you get from a big cam? I like the benefits you get from the "X" but I wanna keep the loping sound of the solid roller.
Thanks, Nate |

i don't think it'll get rid of the lope; that will always be there. the x-pipe will not have the raspiness that the h-pipes have. those 90 degree bends in the h-pipe 'shear' the exhaust, and those rapid directional changes make a bit of noise, kinda like a jet engine 'shears' the air when it compresses it. i like the x-pipe/magnaflow setup. if you want it louder and the tone lower, use bigger pipes.

How big of a solid roller?
This is mine with the pypes x (3'' pypes all the way and magnaflow muffs) and the cam in my sig. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvLwILhnkX8 Here is the same exhaust but with a milder hydraulic cam. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1q3jYXTcaQ Does that help any? I found the sound o be very different, i assume its from the X pipe but could also be the mufflers. My father does not like it, says it doesnt sound like a v8 anymore, lol.

If you are looking for that nasty rough sound , do not use either the H or X pipe . Use a regular dual set-up , as each tailpipe will then spit out the sounds independently from each side of the engine . As far as performance on the street , you would not even notice it . This is my opinion and i am not looking to start a controversy over this .

I listened to shaker455's T/A with a 3" Torque Tech exhaust that had no "H" or "X" pipe and I've not heard anything that sounded so good!

Yep...
just had my "X" pipe removed and dumps added to my '64...but I'm old school and like to listen to each bank separately if for nothing else than diagnostic purposes. And yes...it sounds much meaner to me! JMHO. Ron

My daughter's TATA has a pypes X system on it along with a (very, very, very, tiny!) small cam. It's one of the sweetest sounding pontiacs that I have heard in a long time. I was frankly surprised at how good it sounds.

Pros and cons.
The X system will definitely tone down the sound of your cam at Idle. Its slightly more difficult to install. Increased cost. Higher cabin temps. Its in the way if the transmission needs pulled. Its been my experience the system will improve qtr. mile times by up to 1/10 of a sec in 1/4 mile (not something your going to feel on the street) and has a unique sound at highway speed. I have the system on 2 of my cars just because I was looking for performance. |
