This post discusses our concept of building a car that remained streetable, but had very competitive performance with moderate RPM, 91-93 octane pump gas, It should be noted that the wagon had a 116” wheelbase, weighed between 4040 and 4080# depending on who was driving and what combination of parts we had on the car. And it was 203” long, 77” wide, and 54” tall – frontal area of almost 29 sq. ft.. Imagine the hole it left in the air at 117 MPH! But it was my choice, and it was quite competitive with many smaller cars.

The referenced post is fairly complete about actual parts, but we used 64, 7K3, 96, and finally 6X4 heads, all ported with my Superflow 110 bench. And we switched to the newer adjustable Rhoads lifters set at .007 clearance with our “giant” 234/244/112 Wolverine flat tappet cam in the last few years, shifting at 5800 with both gears. Used a YC block bored .060 and an N crank stroked/equalized .040 for473 ci since 2000.

I have also attached 4 time tickets obtained over a 2 hour period that illustrates what we mean by consistent (car #5462).

This post is several pages long but has good info about out 1972 LeMans wagon.

Dave,
Thanks for information. I have added it to the list.

A question if I may? On another forum I am on some are saying it is very hard to find cores that can be ground at 104 LSA. Then (1997) or now have you found that to be the case?

Thanks,
Stan

Hi Stan, not sure why they would say that Comp Cams and Lunati used to offer cams similar to Dave's as a shelf grind. They are still listed in their catalogs. You are limited somewhat with the LSA using a standard core but usually 104-114 are easily doable.

Didn't mean to answer for Dave, maybe he'll have some additional input.

Comp Cam card of roller I used for 455 SD engine. It was grind used by HO Racing in their SD Trans Am race car. (now owned by Clegg I think)
Used to make the low compression of the SD heads work good.

It was very popular in the 80's.

Please note that the same combination can be listed on more that one list. A combination that is both pump gas and has PMD heads and block will have 2 red vertical rules in that list's last column.
