428GTO70 -

I notice your new pump has vanes all the way to the edges, unlike most of the cast impellers.

Who manufactured the pump, and where did you buy it?

My pump - same as KScircuitguy.

It is the cheaper remanufactured brand from Autozone, called Valucraft. Here is a pic of the box. It was an in stock part also. The more expensive in stock unit was a new unit but had the stamped impellar and was like $26 where this one was only $16

Interesting results and good pictures! More evidence that you never know what you will find in the box of chocolates.

Looking forward to your results..

I ordered a new plate for my new pump a few days ago.It showed up today I took measurments and pics the hole in the plate matches the inside of the impeller perfectely at 2.4 inches the distance from the vanes is .080 ..So i will be fixing that a little other than that I see no problems with it..The one pic looks like the vanes are way on the inside of the hole but there not its just the casting lines from the vanes if anyone wonders

I was hoping my chronic overheating had cured itself over the winter but the weather here has just started to warm up and the temperature is climbing on my '68 firebird with a '73 455. So I pulled the pump. The photos show one of the two divider plates used on the '68 pumps is missing completely, allowing water to bypass the installed plate back to the pump suction. The installed plate has corroded around the nozzle that locates against the timing cover, also allowing water to bypass back to the suction. and the pump is a weird 6-bladed thing with the blades facing the wrong direction as you can see from the OEM 455 pump beside it. Anyone seen apump like this before?
So I reckon with the correct pump and new divider plates, my problem should be fixed.

That sure is a strange impeller on that old 350 pump. I assume the other 455 pump is the one mentioned in the earlier posts since it has the full length vanes. I agree that cooling performance would be poor for the 455 given the other styles of 11 bolt pumps we have seen.

Will these pump variations ever end?

Looks ok, can you get close-ups of the vane design and impeller wheel?

I'm getting feelings of inadequacy not posting pix of my own....., but..

Last week I spent several evenings replacing 2 injectors on my daily driver,

today I spent looking at SUV's to replace my van,

Then I took apart my van (which i was driving while working on my driver), front hubs because of a howl in the right front bearing, AutoZone had bearings, but no seals, so I have to get them tomorrow at NAPA.

Then checked the wife's car for some looseness in front making some noise,

Someday, I may get pix of my own pump!

the above pic of the 350 look identical to the one i just put on my 68 350.

from my sources it's a one yr only usage.

it seems to cool ok in the app i'm using for right now.

65 gto, th400,3:90's stock radiator that 's clean. runs 180 at 3000 rpm and at idle for extended periods. has the a/c shroud and a flex fan. rad has a catch can rigged as a puke tank.

i checked the clearances on the plates and they were right at 1/8".

Malky,
I'm confused, are you running a 8 bolt pump & timing cover on the 73 engine? Can you just go to the 11 bolt pump and cover that you have to fix your problem? Your 11 bolt pump looks good.
I too had a little corosion on the rear plate, but not enough to get the $45 replacements. But, without the front plate on that setup, you surely have a problem as you have discovered. Good detective work.

Malky,
I think I can explain the strange looking impeller on the pump on the right hand side of your photo. The Pontiac pump has the impeller vanes facing the rear of the car. A pump with the impeller vanes facing the front of the car, such as a Chebby or small block Chrysler, would use an impeller like the on the pump on the right. How it came to be part of a Pontiac pump is anyone's guess.

GTO,
The 11 bolt '73 pump is longer from the gasket face to the fan mounting flange than the 68 pump, 4 5/8" vs 4" I think. So none of my pulleys lined up with the '73 pump. I had to reuse the 68 pump off the 350.

I managed to pull the impellers off the 73 and the 68 pumps, thinking I could swap the good '73 impeller into the 68 pump, but it not a very good match. The 73 impeller has a smaller OD, smaller vane inlet diameter, and a different vane contour that doesn't match the 68 divider plate very well.

Geoff, see mike nixon's post - it may be the original impeller! I have ordered a new pump - so now I have to wait to see what I get

Ok, now I understand. Couldn't figure how you were going to use the 11 bolt pump. I thought maybe the use of a different timing chain cover, don't even know if they are interchangeable. What are you going to do about the missing plate? Order a set or can you find one somewhere around you? Wishing you as much luck as I have had. Please let us know how you succeed.
