I always had it sporadically, but a Hiatal hernia from heavy weight training clinched it as a daily problem.

Previcid was fine but you will suffer bone density loss after years, so I changed to Aciphex. Occasional problems from too many chips and starchs too late still, but otherwise fine.

The scope's not bad. They give you great drugs.

They tried to take my gall bladder because my ejection fraction was 50% lower than the minimum reading. Big deal. That surgery would've cured nothing for me IMO. And a second opinion confirmed that. There are no stones and no sludge to be found in mine. Dr Iqbal (pronounced Ickball) had this advice, in his Pakistani accent, Relax, take it easy, not to be upset.

Sorry, I didn't know you were so thin skinned that you would be upset with the fact that I had some reservation about taking medical advice on a auto hobby message board. You seem to hand it out well though.

Am I too cheap? Did you read the part about lemon juice and cabonation and what they do to me. Why increase the pain? ---- Why am I even bothering???

Just curious. Do you have any home remedies for excitability? How about overreacting?

In many cases it can be significantly reduced by losing weight.

Smile Vinegar seems to lessen reflux for me.

Not actually drinking vinegar - although a friend who is a doctor told me his mother did just that - but eating foods with high vinegar content (dill pickles or salad with a vinegar-based salad dressings) in the evening. When I eat something that I feel will aggravate the reflux, I rely on Pepcid Complete (OTC). My doctor did tell me to lose 20 lbs and it would probably go away. I believe that the lemon juice in water would do the same thing as the vinegar - maybe an acid that is not hydrochloric-based (like stomach acid) triggers the gall bladder to release more of the alkali-based bile that neutralizes the stomach acid before the partially digested food enters the intestines??? WhatEVER it does, the vinegar helps immensely.

I had AR for years......25 plus minimum....no spaghetti, fried foods, lasagna etc...was on Losac, didn't help ...my gall bladder was giving me attacks weekly...just had it out a month ago ..whew waht a relief that part is over.....anyway only one thing cured my AR....yes cured...CURED.....done....gone.....finito ...eat all the stuff like tomato sauce, pesto sauce, fried chicken ...anything.....
I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnyia. Snored like a lumberjack. My bride sent me to the sleep diagnosys clinic. They got me to try a C-Pap machine....Took 2 weeks of hell to get used to it....basically a breathing machine with an air mask....2 years now....not 1 AR episide....no tums, no losac, no malox ...nothing. Stopped snoring and started waking up looking for tail every morning....I have not missed a night without my machine...it travels with me etc...don't give a crap about anyone laughing and I sleep 6 hours and raring to go......
My doctor is amazed at my health turn around and lets say this....my wife stopped asking me to go to garage sales on Saturday mornings!

Sorry to hear that Cuz. Hope they straighten it out.

I had periodic problems with it for a few years. So bad, I couldn't sleep sometimes. Wound up just being cheap coffee at work for me though. Didn't go to the doctors for it and only Foldgers when I drink coffee.

It never stops raining here.

During the night I made a decision. UNCLE - I give up! I apologize for trying to help.

You can keep your Acid Reflux, you can choke on the barf! You can sit up in pain all night.

You can give your hard earned bucks (in a terrible economy) to medical personnel.

It is no skin off my nose!

BTW you who mentioned vinegar and apples or other 'home remedys' probably should not be giving 'medical advice' on an auto forum either; it seems to offend people when you try to help.

I am taking my own advice and skipping to another thread.

Dont expect any other help from me either, NTHFO.

As they say in southern Yokohama, Sayonara y'all

I am not overweight. But the doc did tell me acidic foods, and stimulants are a big trigger. IE: alcohol, caffeine, etc.
He also told me, that the tum's and such, are high in Calcium and such, and can and will cause stones over time. So that would suck.
I will try the lemon juice, I really try all the home remedies. Maybe one is the trick, and I will be off the pills for good. Kinda my goal.
However, If I miss a dose of the Aciphex, the next day, I will be hurting.
Question: When do you take your pill? Night time or Morning?
My pill say's to take it in the AM, 1/2 hr before eating. The reason I ask, I wonder if it wears off sometimes at night, then I get an attack.
Glad, I am not alone here either.

I agree bile is a digestive enzyme, but it is not acidic at all, quite the opposite.

I also agree that other digestive problems may indeed contribute to GERD,though when all else is said and done,it is the stomach acid that damages the espohagus.

Bret P.
Quoted from Dr. Shipko:
In certain anxiety disorders reflux is often a result of bile flowing backwards from the small intestine into the stomach. Bile dissolves the mucous barrier that lines the stomach, making it sensitve to the effects of the hydrochloric acid that is produced by the stomach. Also bile itself is a powerful irritant to the stomach, causing further release of acid and more irritation. Because bile is alkaline, the stomach produces even more acid to neutralize the alkalinity. So bile both irritates the stomach and stimulates acid release.

Constipation would also be a factor in bile reflux. Take care of that problelm may help the others.

Vinegar, lemon juice or other products that have citric acid will also stimulate acid release.

Stress is definately an underlying factor. Add several days of high anxiety, acidic fluids and you can see the effects of it.

I have been on Nexium for the last 3 years, had the beryllium tests and a endoscopy this summer. Neither showed an ulcer, cancer or H. pylori. still the AR flares up in the early months of april and peaks in july. In my particular instances,i now see the connection between anxiety disorders and acid reflux.

I have A R also....for the last 2 yrs I have taken Prilosec (OTC) , but I cant do the 14 pills ,wait 2 months...I have to take one every day...
I buy them in bulk off EBay, at about 50-65% from the store price.
works very well.

For those who have a problem with excess acid after eating spaghetti and other pastas made with tomatoes, you might want to have your wife put a pinch or two of bicarbonate in the sauce. It reduces the acidity and can prevent the heartburn which can follow eating it.

Don't use too much, it tends to sweeten the sauce.

If you go out for Italian, you can take some with you to mix into your dinner.

I found one Italian restaurant, locally, whose sauces don't cause me any problems. I mentioned it to the cook and he said their tomatoes cost over twice as much as the ones most places use. Their pizza is milder, as well. It's nice to eat it with no problems.

I try reading different books on problems that affect me. One book or group of books that have helped me are Dr. D'Adamos' books: LIVING RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE,EATING RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE,COOKING RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE.I bought mine at Barnes and Noble. I sat there and read afew chapters before the purchase. His theory is that our blood type affects what we should eat and what we should avoid for good health. I avoid vinegar and foods with vinegar added.I drink a small glass of 'ginger smoothie' every day.I buy it at the health food store. Seems to help my digestion. I eat onions and a raw clove of garlic everyday(mostly evryday).Thats me everyone is different.I don't drink coffee(its a no-no for me).I've tried his suggestions for foods to eat and they do work for me. When I stray is when I seem to have problems. So as others have said everyone is different.Good luck.

Wow, garlic is one of my biggest triggers. Lot's of people think/swear by the ginger. You can buy ground ginger and sprinkle it on foods. It will help also.

Sorry to hear about your wife having problems with acid reflux. Hope she gets some relief.

I have had AR for several years.I was on prescription and changed to another with less side effects. I then asked doctor about trying prilosec OTC. I have been on it ever since and have no problems. I try not to eat too late and stay away from eating too much and super spicy food. I also avoid soft drinks when possible.
I'm sure my AR is mild compared to others. I know others who have had surgury and have to take two prescriptions a day.
