Default New laptop and now which firewall/virus protection?

What are your recommendations for virus and firewall protection for a new laptop. It's not a high end one, but it's new.

Thanks for any advice. I'm using Avast still on this desktop, BTW.

I second the Microsoft Security Essentials. I have run other programs and all of them have slowed down my computer. MS does not and it's free!

AVG used to be great, but the last few versions have become more and more of a resource hog like Norton and similar programs. MSE (as recommended above) acts a lot more like AVG used to be several years ago.

I'll second Crap Cleaner (ccleaner) and Malware Malbytes. With those three programs, you're pretty much covered for any problems you're likely to encounter.

My dad's six month old HP has Norton, and seems to run slow for being that new. He's also had other nags with Norton.

I'm thinking about dumping Norton for something else, or at least running a virus scan program outside of Norton.

I've seen the commercials for PCmatic.com, and they say it's free. But I wonder if it's only free for a limited time, then pay if you want to continue. Or at the least have to register, which will result in being bombarded with emails to upgrade.
Anybody tried them?

My sister gave me her 5-6 (I think) year old laptop which was cleaned of all programs in January 2011.
I'm having difficulty getting connected to any wireless network with it, but I'll be using the programs fiedlerh posted when I get it up and running.

Xs 3 for Microsoft Security Essentials. Set the Windows firewall to medium or high and you should be ok. Zone Alarm will drive you nuts.

AVG is a resourse hog, and Norton won't find what MSE will.

If you're going to run anti-virus programs like Norton, make sure you've got the most RAM that's allowed in your system. Most computers, when new from a store, have the least amount of RAM to run. Try to buy quality sticks too.

I take it this is a componant that the average joe with handyman skills can install himself.

Getting some good advice here, and hope to put it to use, but I don't want to take a chance on fouling up my dad's nice computer.

Kaspersky has been an excellent anti virus program for us for years. Amazon sells it for under $30 that will take care of three computers.

MSE, CCleaner, WinASO is all we use and never have infections.

Yes, they all do different things.
MSE is your antivirus and helps manage Windows firewall
Malwarebytes takes care of spyware that MSE misses. Usually doesn't find much after the first cleaning, unless your kids use your computer all the time. Thanks to Bastard of Arkansas for the tip on this software.
CrapCleaner deletes all the useless temporary files that Windows never gets rid of.

Thanks all. One down. I have a desktop to do that's been sitting here for a few months. One I bought from work. It's an ACER Veriton 7600GT with Windows XP (bought for $100). They generally scrub them of software when they sell them off. I haven't fired it up on line for the lack of protection.

I still like ZoneAlarm for a firewall. It was, and maybe still is, written totally in assembly. nice tight code, almost no load on CPU.

Zonealarm was great when we ran windows 98, get with the program in 2011 and beyond. If you are running XP get all the latest updates and download Microsoft's security essentials.
XP has a built in firewall dude.
We don't need anyother software firewall. jeezz
You're best bet is get a dang router with a built in hardware firewall.
