Default 1972 Pontiac Trans Am

This is a rare TA that was found and bought out in El Paso recently. Rare partially because of body color alone. If I had found it, it would be in my garage replacing a GTO.

Read the link and it will tell more about this car and the production run for '72.

Nice car. I knew a guy back in the late 1970s who had a '72 TA, his was white with a four speed. As the article mentions, they all had the 455HO that year and production was limited. I don't know if Lucerne Blue was rare that year or not, but it is my favorite color for Trans Ams.

"Talking about Camaro and Firebird F-bodies on the assembly line in Norwood, Ohio, Avila explains, "1972 was the year of the strike. By the time the strike was over, the 1973 smog emissions had come into play, and they couldn't put [the 1972 models] up for sale, so they scrapped more than 2,000 cars."

Have always wondered the validity of "2000" very late '72 F-bodys being scrapped, just hard to wrap my head around that huge an amt. the primer dunk tank wasn't monstrous, the Body Bank was only so big, only so many builds could have been idled at the beginning & middle of the line. Some F-body's that were in final assembly were completed by supervisors, driven out, & shipped to dealers.

It's possible the corporate line in respect to "2000" may have been by counting body sub assemblies/partially spotwelded together body shells. The entire emissions angle also makes little sense either, 72's had the same standpipe & fuel & return lines as a '73. Sure '72 engines wouldn't pass '73 emissions, but lets say there were quite a few primered very late 72 body's without VINs in them, they could have easily been built with '73 engines.

03E White/dlx black M22, AC, KR's here.
Schedule date 3/31/72. By 4/06, the Strike was on.

Have you read the book, "Echoes of Norwood"?
(or something like that, have the book somewhere)

Excellent read about it with pics.

Some day I'm gonna get one of these, not that I'd ever give MSN the satisfaction of biting on their click bait.

There were a lot of finished cars waiting to be shipped also. AND, I believe that number is Camaros and Firebirds combined.

it was more than just emissions, also. Remember that '73 was the first year for new impact/crash standards. The '73s got additional bracing up front which required a different core support, fenders, and inner fenders and different brackets for the rear bumpers.

Yes, Camaros & Firebirds combined, but there were also Nova's produced at Norwalk. On the crash standards, every thing that met '73 govt safety standards was bolt on. No F-body body shell modifications needed from late '72 to '73's.

Just have always had a hard time understanding the huge number of partially completed cars that are attributed to being crushed. Contemplate what the F body assembly line runs an hour, 75 cars an hour, max, then factor body shells in the Body Bank, a few bodies from the dip tank, spotwelded bodies ready to go on into the dip tank. just makes no sense that the number could be so high.

Lucy Blue/Blue Int - Auto, AC
Unrestored Texas survivor with texas-toast paint patina on upper panels.

I thought it was either going to be the Adriatric Blue 72 TA ,
or that maybe someone had found the Silver one thought to be in Texas.

How much energy expended to create those bodies, then to crush them, and then to make new bodies.?

EVIL.. Why not just let them be completed as 1972 models and sold as such?

Or simply sell them as 1973 models with the 1973 front bumper parts.

Or, just sold as replacement body shells...

Would love reading about any details of any communication between officials at GM and the US government about any of this.
