Trans swap ???
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I hope 1 of you guys can answer this for me. I want to know if I can put a T-5 in my 73GTO. I now have an M-22 in my 73 GTO & it's been in there for about 35 years. I want to be able to drive it again long distance but with the gears in it right now it makes it almost impossible. I have 3:73's in the rear & it get about 10-12 mpg. Plus on the hwy. I have to keep it down to about 55-60 mph or the MPG. goes down even more & it get hot quicker when I stop of course because it's been running hard, about 3200 rpm's for that speed. Hard on the engine to. I want to know if I can do a direct swap with the T-5 & M-22. I ask can I just pull out the M-22 & put in the T-5 with no other changes, or do I have to go to a HYD. throw out bearing & a different P/P. I know I'll have to modify my tunnel a little to have the shifter come up through the floor, but do I have to change a lot of the other items listed. ??? Any help you can give me will help. Also which trans do I look for ???

Install it with wing-nuts, so when it shatters you won't need tools to remove it. There isn't a T5 on the planet that will stand up to a real engine in a heavy car.

OK which 5 speed trans can I use & not spend a ton to swap it out. In other words which trans can I use by just pulling my M-22 out & put right back in. Is there any such trans that can be swapped out from an M-22 to ???? without changing the clutch plate & the throw out bearing from mechanical to hyd. I'd like to be able to just swap 1 out & 1 in. ?????

I think the problem is the "not spend a ton" part of your request. There are some good options but they are in my opinion not cheap. What were you hoping to spend?

Any way you go you are going to spend a lot of money. If your clutch and trans are in good shape consider a GearVendors overdrive unit. You can leave everything as it is now and just add it on and you will NEVER break it.

I just check them out looks pretty cool about $2800 but you would have that or more in a 5 speed swap

I ran around for a long time in the mustang world and those things would live under 3300 lb mustangs with 250 ft lbs of torque. It'll shatter immediately in a gto packing around 500 ft lbs. From my understanding the teemed tko bolts up easily. You can find tko 500's used a bit cheaper, but it's still going to be an expense. In regards to the Richmond, I've looked at that option but at least at the time it was not an overdrive transmission as 5th gear was still 1:1. That may be different now but that case didn't really help you without having an overdrive.

Not saying one is a better option than the other but I just put a TKO in my 71 bird and it was pretty straight forward swap. I did go with a hydraulic setup but you don't have to. Didn't have much more than $2800 in it. A bit more w the clutch and such but you will want new parts like that anyway as long as you are in there. Certainly not cheap but what is anymore. Plus you can probably get a fair bit of coin for the M22. Lotta purists out there would love to have it.

A TKO is the easiest way to go and the most traveled, so there is a lot of support for it.
The T5 won't last behind a big block. |

I bought a Keisler TKO600 (2nd or 3rd design) kit a few years ago, for the 'bird (2nd gen), and it was a straight forward swap. That is still a stalled project, and have never run it. I have a trimmed McLeod blow proof, and a McLeod Street Twin clutch, all fresh.
Oddly, even though that car is an OE manual car, I'm pretty sure I'm going to switch to a 4L80E. I'm just at the point where I don't have the patience for a manual car anymore, which sounds crazy, but it's true. Once I get that setup out of the car, I will sell it, and always give board members great deals. If anyone is interested, I guess I can make an effort to pull it sooner than later. .

Before you settle on a trans, google tremec problems and sit back for a lot of pages. I have a bumper sticker that says Tremecs are junk. And they are.

Really? That's news to me....
Been selling them for almost 10 years and have never had to do warranty work or replacement on a single one of them. These have been behind engines ranging from 350 lb-ft of torque to 650. |

You have never had a problem? Never had to hear from Tremec "Sir, you only have a six month warranty on that transmission/

No sir, not one single problem.
I had a Magnum T-56 leak from the tailhousing once, but there was a service bulletin out on the seals and Tremec replaced it for them. |
