Default 1966 GTO water pump question

Hi all, I have a 1966 GTO with the WT 389 in it and I was out driving it and the temperature got up above 210. I was reading postings on the plate behind the pump so I took it off and it doesn't look the same as the ones in the posting that members are adjusting the clearance between the impellers and the plate. Can it still be adjusted?

First you have to address the issue as to why the car got that hot. Is this a regular occurrence? Have you checked the tstat?

If the car has been running the right temp up till now, I wouldn't touch the pump unless its making noise or leaking

Just finished the car 2 weeks ago ran it twice and got hot. 210 with it 70 outside and 220ish at 85 outside. from what I am reading the clearance between the divider is the issue with most overheating cars I need to reduce the clearance. I am thinking about getting the stainless divider has anyone used the SS divider? Any good?

Don't order anything until you take the current water pump off and measure the gap between the dividing plate and the impeller. You're guessing otherwise.

Since you already removed the pump make sure the tubes and rubber grommets that direct the flow are in place. What type impeller is on your pump? Is it cast iron or a lighter metal?

66 pumps do not have tubes or grommets.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if they did or not.

If you need new plates, go with Inline Tube, I hear the stainless do not fit very good, I have the Inline and they fit perfect and are a better copy of the originals.

John is right. The SS 8 bolt plates are not what you want to play with. Get the repo original 2 plate set from Inline. No alterations needed like the SS plates need. Price was 39.00 last I knew. And that's a bargain.

All of you guys are jumping the gun. I had the exact same thing with my new motor. Why not check the timing? It the tstat stuck? Was on mine and it was new. What condition is your radiator? What about the fan? What are you running, clutch? Where is the fan mounted?whats the gap between the fan and the radiator? Do you have a shroud?

I'm not saying the pump is NOT the problem but check all the other things too.

Prove the accuracy of the gauge first. Use a known good IR temp gun.

t-stat is new, rad is new, new fan clutch 7 blade fan and it is shrouded, my original divider plates don't look that bad I guess I will adjust the gap and reinstall them. I will need to remember to bring my temp gun home and check it.

There area couple of places that you can send your pump to that will pres the plate to the pump to get a nice tight gap.. They mostly rebuild pumps but do this as well.
