Default 1966 GP - stuck auto gearshift lever

I own a 1966 Pontiac Grand Prix with a floor-mounted factory automatic transmission console. The gearshift lever knob button will not depress and the gearshift rod is now stuck in D and won’t budge. The 1966 Pontiac Chassis Shop Manual is pretty much silent about any gearshift control adjustments other than a “Gearshift Controls (Console)” exploded diagram on page 7C-34. Before I start disassembling the gearshift control mechanism does anyone have any tips? I hope the problem is not in the hydra-matic itself. Up until the time the gearshift lever jammed everything worked well.

Mark, tighten the shifter by turning clockwise. I had a 65 with the same setup and it would not move if the shifter was loose. Good luck.
