65 GTO Parking brake warning light wiring question
I have bought the harness from Ames along with the switch, and will fabricate the mounting bracket for the switch. For the wiring, I assume I remove the "generic' dash light bulb/socket that is in the "BRAKE" location on the guage panel and swap it with the replacement socket/bulb, but then what do I connect the replacement power connector to for proper power? It is a fairly short wire with a "slip-on" connector like you would connect to a spare spade on the fuse panel, but its so short I can't see it reaching anywhere near the fuse panel. Is there another wire connected to the guage panel somewhere near the BRAKE indicator that I pull from a spade and then connect this one "in-line"? I looked under the dash while setting up my console wiring harness but I couldn't see where this might connect for power. I can easily cut/splice it longer and run all the way down to the fuse panel but I assumed it was designed same as an original I saw on ebay that also has a short power wire.
Thanks for any help! |

The key on 12 volt + power wire for the accessory brake warning lamp
The power wire plugs into the dash harness, which on the early 64-67 Lemans or GTO every harness has a provision built into it for "key on" 12 volt battery +.
The wire end is unused if the car has no accessory optional features. A power antenna or a rear window defogger would also connect to that same wire. It is a twined dark brown wire in behind the gauges; joined together at the crimp end; with a tiny plastic plug-in. Hence the short wire for the power plug-in on the one wire of that light bulb mini-harness.

I just now looked on the 65 Tempest/GTO Wiring Manual diagram and I do see the dual brown wire connection you mention shown for "Accessory Feed", so I will track that down under the dash and connect to that. I have a power antenna installed so I will be needing to pull from that same power source when I connect that up too (I need to buy and install the power antenna switch first). Thanks! Randy |

FWIW...
If you car never had the Parking Brake Warning Light, then there is no socket within the factory hole.
You should just see/have a piece of factory-applied tape over the hole if it hasn't already fallen off. Not sure what bulb if any came with the socket from Ames but the OE bulb was/is a Flasher Bulb.

I'll get myself upside down under the dash again soon and see exactly what I'm working with. No bulb came with the socket, this wiring expects the same (89?) bulb as the dash illumination bulbs. |

Yes, the bulb for your parking brake warning lamp would be the same as the bulbs in the dash harness that are inside of the grey wire; metal can sockets. I remember those as being #1895 bulbs.
GM made those mini-harnesses for several of their divisions and so some have a short power wire (Pontiac A body cars) and some of those are longer and plug in for 12 volts of battery "key on" power directly into the fuse block. Either way the light turns on the same.

Thanks for the guidance and reference materials. I purchased the Ames switch and nut combo plus the wiring harness, which I then modified to reach the fusebox. Fabricated a bracket based on pictures that provided perspective then test fit/modified until it works. Never had a BRAKE warning light before!

Well Done! Did the harness kit come with a Flasher Bulb?

Hey Jeff, thanks! No bulb came with harness, like Pete said it just takes the standard 1895 dash illumination bulb. And as for the power connection, I should have been able to find the double-brown-wire connector that Pete mentioned and use that, but I didn't so I just extended the power wire myself; the switch/ground wire was long enough to reach the BRAKE light bulb as-is.

OK, I'm way out in Leftfield.
The NOS kit I bought years ago came with a "Flasher" bulb. This is why I keep mentioning it, This bulb is the same but has the flasher "Metal" strip that pulses went hot. I have been using it for years now and had a hard time finding replacements. So it may not be correct for '66 ?? but I like it. Click on image to see Short Vid; IMG-0226 by J. Hamlin, on Flickr

I believe that is a #257 bulb that flashes.

That is correct, and if you can't find a decent price in the automotive sector,
Lionel Trains used these as well and are usually price far less.

I am definitely going to swap mine out; its not like I won't notice the BRAKE light when it is on (since I've never had it before) but flashing will be even cooler. Thanks everyone! |

I just realized that I couldn't add this option to my Tempest if I wanted to. I don't have a pic of my speedo, but its like this one:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/1964-1965-19...oAAOSwPPZgJ2LL It doesn't even have a hole to insert the light socket. And for sure not the little box with the red lens. I guess in this case I'd do the warning light to the left of the dash bezel. |
