Default A6 compressor RnR

Need to change out the compressor '77 Grand Prix.

The shop manual for '77 states when replacing the compressor the accumulator has to be removed to determine how much oil is in it in addition to how much is in the compressor.

Is this something that absolutely needs to be done? I really don't want to open up the system any more than I need to.

Can't the same amount of oil that came out of the old comp just be added to the new one?
