Brake master cylinder and torque shaft bearings
Any one have any info on obtaining a new brake master cylinder for a 63 Lemans v-8? My mechanic would like for me to replace the one currently on the car. The only other one I have has the brake line directly in front of the cylinder. The one I need and is in the car currently has the brake line UNDER the cylinder. I couldn't find one at O'reilly, Napa or AutoZone (calif.)
I have a rumbling noise under my 63 Tempest, might be the torque shaft bearings, I did purchase 2 on this website, How can I remove and install the bearings without having the factory tools? Removing the torque tube I can do, just want to do the bearings right as a layman mechanic. cause they stand on a wall and they say "Nothing's going to hurt you tonight, not on MY watch"! |

Send your master cylinder to White Post Restorations..... they do a great job of re-sleeving and restoring master/wheel cylinders. As for the tool to R&R your Torque Tube Insulators/bearings, I have the Kent Moore tool listed in the repair
manual if you want to borrow it. Just need a pretty good deposit to make sure I get it back! JK |

Driveshaft bearings, master cylinder and flywheel
Thank you for your response. I found a new cross referenced master cylinder for a 62-68 GM oldsmobile. As soon as I install it I'll forward some info. In regards to your offer for using the tool to remove and replace the shaft bearings, which I believe I purchased from you, I will follow up. While removing the starter on the 63 Tempest I notice some hairline cracks on the flywheel. Therefore, I most likely will attempt both jobs at once. I'm in California. Keep you posted.
In the meantime, anyone out there have for sale a good condition flywheel for a 63 326 v-8? I don't want to let the car sit for very long. While on the subject, will a flywheel from a Tempest 4-cyl work? # of teeth, diameter, bolt pattern? etc. Cause they stand on a wall and they say, "Nothing is going to hurt you tonight, not on MY watch"! |

63 326 V8 automatic or manual trans? The 4 cylinder flywheel wont work on the 326.

Keith, the Tempest is a 326 v-8 automatic.

The flywheel you mention is actually a lightweight flexplate. It is only used for starting the engine. Where are the cracks exactly? Can you post some pictures?
You can try listing a want ad in the ropeshaft reader. |

Here are the pictures I took of the flex plate. The stress lines are almost all around the flex bolts. Since it will be quite a task I never undertook, I will also try to replace the torque shaft bearings as soon as I find out how to proceed with that task and as soon as I find a flex plate. Thank you for your response and input, any more will be appreciated.

I'll have to check to be sure, If memory serves.... it appears that you're missing the re-inforcement ring that goes over the flexplate before the bolts go in. That would probably explain the cracks due to the flexplate actually flexing.
