Look into getting a mini-starter. It will have more clearance from the headers, as well as more powerful.

LOTS of discussions on here, do a search and you'll find a lot of info. RobMC, IMI, CSR, several brands to choose from. Avoid the Jegs/Summit starters, they don't tend to be as reliable. SecondGenGraveyard on Facebook has some good prices on some.

Had the same issue years ago, intermittent start problem on 76 manual TA .
Turns out the back drive rod was missing sometimes allowing the lever on the column to slip down and act as an inhibitor
Solution - Cable tie it in the UP position and never have the issue again - Worthwhile checking

Could be this, especially if you have headers as the backdrive wont work with them in place. If that is the problem, a simple wiggle to the collar on the column should fix that. More likely heat soak though, if it 'fixes itself' with a bit of a cool down. I had the same problem with the stock starter (along with most everyone else). I tried the insulator blanket first and it did nothing. I put in a mini starter and have not had a problem since. I got mine from Summit and hate to read they have problems, so know I guess I have that to worry about!
