Does this carb # look original and not a repop?

No. This is a restamped "Frankencarb".

How can you tell? Is it because the code is crooked or because there is a VC stamp? I'm also looking at this one but it has the code and date stamp on the same line. I thought the date was supposed to be a line lower on the right.

Correction, the last photo is of a different carb that I am looking at but has the code and date stamp on the same line. I thought the date was supposed to be a line lower on the right? What is wrong with either of these carbs?

For the first one, my guess is the staggered baseline of the numbers, inconsistent spacing between the numbers, and the depth of the stamps.

I've never seen a stamp that deep, but I haven't checked hundreds of carbs.

Also I notice the area where the stamp is seems totally free of corrosion, unlike most of the rest of the carb.

For reference, here's a couple '68 carbs I have.

Yep, I would say it is pretty much impossible to have a factory machine stamped carb come out with number like that. Not just out of line up and down, but some of them slightly tilted.

Kenth knows his carbs very well by the way.

Here is the number and date stamp on a NOS 704 carb from 1971.

Where would the date code be on this?

Thanks for the photos. Vey helpful. So based on the examples, this 69 carb looks legit to me but is the XA to close to the code #? Should there be a gap?

There were different styles used at different times on these carbs. Sometimes the number began with "70" and sometimes not. At certain times the font used was smaller. And the styles might change during the same model year.

I used to have a style chart with pictures that I linked to but it is gone now it seems. Does anyone have it? I should have tried to save it years ago.

The best way to be sure is to reference a known authentic factory carb. Kenth and a few others also have a lot of knowledge about these so they are good sources too.

This appears to be the style used in '69 when the "70" was omitted from the part number and the date code included on the same line. This is also the style of my '69 RA III 28273 carb assembled in December '68. The two letter code is next to the part number. That carb is close to the same time period so it COULD be legit as far as I know, but I do not have a similar carb to compare to be sure.

I do not know as much as about these as Kenth does!
