Default 68 Ignition Switch Cyl. Remove

Hello All,

I had the ignition switch fail on me today and I am not able to remove the cylinder.

The spring back return from the cranking position no longer returns and I have to jump the solenoid in order to crank.

The problem is that the cylinder will not release from the switch.

I can depress the plunger with a wire thru the bezel when in the Acc. position and turn the cylinder counterclockwise slightly further while removing the wire but the cylinder will not release from the switch housing.

I am thinking that there may be some internals associated with the spring back from cranking position that are not allowing the cylinder to release.

Any Ideas on how to remove it without destroying it?

Thanks Dave.

ah yes the stubborn 68 ignition

try this ........ tear a 3" strip offresh masking or duct tape off...

fold it over the key and down to the tumbler and press it on the tumbler
dont get it on the lock ring ....

it will help pull the tumbler out when u pull the key holding em together like a third hand

dont cover the hole for push rod ...

Scott

If you can't get it out using a paperclip and counterclockwise rotation, pushing in and wiggling it around using the key the only other option is to drill the lock cylinder. I've had to do it before (missing key) it's not a fun job.

Scott,

I gave the tape a try but with no success so I went extreme and wedged a screw alongside of the key. The screw has a good bite and even pulling and wiggling with vise grips attached to the screw it still wont let loose. I think the switch would pull thru the dash before the cylinder lets loose.

Pete, I really did not want to resort to destroying the cylinder but it looks like I don't have a choice.

so being that the key has to go into the accessorie position and it cant as I understand...
bummer
I havent seen that before ...sounds like catastrophic internal failure...

here is another thought.... the stainless facia the key goes thru is what keeps the switch helld in the dash
it hangs up in the hole of the outer lock ring... can be gently pried off

STOP

I will get you a picture on where to drill the hole for access to the release button/plunger on the tumbler

fairly sure its at the 1 oclock position

Scott,

The key will go to all positions it won't return from the crank position to the run position on its own.

I can depress the plunger and turn CCW past the Acc. position but the cylinder will not pull out.

Thanks for the pics.

Dave

Sounds like the spring failed in the switch & worse if it won't even crank. But that shouldn't effect removal of the tumbler unless something in the switch is preventing it from turning counter clockwise past the accessory only position.

It sounds like you are doing it right though by Pressing in the pin that you can see in Scott's picture. If holding that in allows you to turn it a fuzz further counter clockwise than the accessory position, it sounds like you are right there. I don't believe it will just pop out though. when its turned counter clockwise that extra bit, I would wiggle it all over & it really should come out. Sounds like you are so close.

time to pop the stainless facia off around the key and the ignition , it will fall out the back
after you unspin the lock ring
