He's doing some more diagnosing that Paul has suggested.

So what is their guy doing that you and your guys haven't done in the past 2 years and 165 hours of diagnostics?

Judging from the latest videos that went up...Appears they have the hired engine tech "grasping at straws".

Grasping at Straws meaning:
To be grasping at straws means to be willing to do, say, or believe anything that offers even the slightest hope in a desperate situation, even though there is almost no chance

Running race fuel through it ain't helping

"QUICK-SILVER",
The guy that Jeff and Paul picked to check the motor out is a great guy and really knows his stuff. Paul was concerned that the fuel I had in the tank was bad. We ran it on race fuel today and the knocking noise was still present. Though this is frustrating, I do appreciate Paul and Jeff finding the guy to come here and check the motor out. At this point, the diagnosis of this motor is between Paul, Jeff and the guy they selected to look at this motor. Now that we have moved past fuel being the source of the knock, I'm hoping we can get closer to finding the real problem.

I know the motor is still shaking around a little bit. That will get addressed as well.

At this point all there is left to do is run it on a test stand to fully rule out any in-chassis variables. But I think we all know the tapping is internal to the engine and will require some form of exploratory surgery.

What's the difference between that and an engine run stand?

Having my rose colored glasses on , Its possible that the result of the selected engine tech not finding anything external to the engine to explain the knock will result in the tech pulling the engine followed by a free ride of the engine back to the Koerner Racing to be made right...

One can only hope

grivera,
I wish I had access to a stand. If we get to that point I'm hoping their guy can locate one to run this motor.

MarkS57,
The tech has a few more things to check. I guess we'll find out what will happens next but I do know that I prefer to keep this motor in Virginia!

Steve C.,
Damn...I could have bought one of those test stands! I spent more money diagnosing this motor than the cost of one of those!

I don't blame you one bit. In the end, I kind of suspect that might be the option they come back with though- hopefully they will take into account the time that has elapsed and the effort you and many others have put into this thing; not to mention the money, and solve this ASAP: for you.

Well for me ... zero chance of any kind of transmission, frame/exhaust clearance, accessories, engine mounts etc. etc. causing any kind of noise.

You have an almost immediate solution to the problem if it makes no noise on the stand.

If it still makes the noise on the stand ... well then it's probably going to need to be pulled apart .... so it's nice to have it already out of the vehicle.

MarkS57,
I'm hoping for that as well. I would love to get some drive time before another season is lost.

STEELCITYFIREBIRD,
I've had some pretty experienced guys looking at this motor. I'm confident they've looked at everything chassis related that could be causing the knocking. Honestly, I think thats a waste of time but I understand why they may want to do that.

At least the shaking seems to have subsided quite a bit. Whats the idle rpms in the latest videos?

Sorry i haven't been following the whole time, does the knock increase with engine rpm or remain the same?

scott70,
It was a little higher than I would like but it was right around 1,000 rpm.

slowbird,
I believe it does. The higher the rpm's the more it's drowned out by the motor but the knocking has always been the same.

Joe, I’m not sure how far you are from CVM but have them tear it down for you, they know Pontiacs. If close enough, have them come listen to it or run it on a stand once it’s out.

Best wishes and keep you head up.

Is Jim "Mr P-body" LeHart still at CVM or did he retire? I got a set of custom pistons from him years ago for a 400 build. At the time he was very knowledgeable and passionate about Pontiac engines.

At this point, I'd let the local guy and the original builder work on diagnoses, but I'd review any changes they recommend. For example if it's piston slap, you could have the current pistons coated on the skirts instead of buying new pistons. If a wrist pin or single piston is damaged, you could replace just one piston and re-balance. Just depends on what they find.
